Job Duties: Will be trained on quality histologic techniques in conjunction with performing daily Laboratory Assistant duties in the Histology Laboratory. The apprentice will be scheduled to work 50% of their time as a Histology Laboratory Assistant and the remaining 50% will be dedicated to the apprenticeship (includes on-line didactic and in lab clinical training). Will receive on the job training to include specialized knowledge of laboratory procedures (specimen staining, identification, proper embedding and sectioning of processed tissues, slide mounting, handling, and documentation) and time to complete required coursework for the Histologic Certification Program. Performs all duties as a Laboratory Assistant. Trained to become competent to process tissues on processing equipment or by manual methods to ensure proper fixation for examination. Trained to become competent to identify Is and determine proper orientation of tissue specimens and to embed specimens in paraffin to ensure proper alignment for sectioning. Trained to become competent in and perform microtomy at proper micron to render quality sections for diagnoses. Trained to become competent in and perform routine and special staining procedures as required to distinguish cells and organisms for diagnostic examination.
