Gelman Sciences, Inc company history timeline

1977

Gelman, a graduate of the University of Michigan School of Public Health, received a permit from the Michigan Water Resources Commission to discharge manufacturing waste to an on-site sewage lagoon in 1977.

1984

In 1984, a graduate student at the U-M Department of Environmental and Industrial Health by the name of Daniel Bicknell conducted a sampling study on Third Sister Lake, which neighbored the Gelman Sciences manufacturing plant.

1986

The Ecology Center opposed Gelman Science's plan to place dioxane-contaminated waste in a deep-injection well in 1986.

1988

In 1988, the DNR named Gelman Sciences the second worst polluter in Michigan.

1990

His name is regularly sprinkled throughout the news stories beginning in the mid-1990’s.

1991

In 1991, courts ruled that city the liable for clean-up costs, a decision described by the Ann Arbor News as “tantamount to a license to pollute.” Additionally, Michigan's DNR faced significant downscaling and restructuring with the election of John Engler as governor.

1995

2008

AADL carries "Various reports on the dioxane pollution", by Gelman Sciences, Inc., in the 3rd floor Reference area, which includes documents prior to 2008.

2016

DEQ proposes tougher cleanup standard to protect residents from dioxane (MLive, March 15, 2016)

The library’s completion of the Gelman digitization in early 2016 is a remarkable coincidence, coming only a few months into another major Michigan water contamination case – in Flint – that has focused national and international attention on public water supplies.
