Postdoctoral Fellow - Cell Culture and Bioprocess Operations, Park Lab
Genentech 4.5
Doctoral fellow job at Genentech
A Postdoctoral Fellow position is available for a highly motivated and independent candidate to join the laboratory of Dr. Jonathan Park in the Research Materials Group (RMG) within the Cell Culture and Bioprocess Operations (CCBO) department at Genentech. RMG supports Research & Development efforts across the company by performing transient transfections to produce recombinant proteins.
This position will focus on developing a novel, high-titer Chinese Hamster Ovary (CHO) transient expression platform. The project aims to understand and overcome the biological bottlenecks of transient gene expression (TGE) in CHO cells, such as limiting factors like nuclear DNA uptake, cell cycle progression, and transcriptional activity, which restrict current protein yields.
You will utilize advanced molecular and genetic engineering approaches, including OMICS, CRISPR/Cas9, and other advanced molecular biology tools, to identify and overcome intracellular barriers to plasmid delivery and expression. You will explore ways to improve protein expression, including screening genome-wide libraries for increased expression, with the ultimate goal of optimizing a cell line for a high-throughput transient transfection process.
The Opportunity:
* You will have opportunities to productively collaborate with other researchers across gRED (Genentech Research and Early Development) and PTD (Pharmaceutical Technical Development), present your work to project teams, and contribute to scientific publications.
* As a member of the RMG and CCBO, you will gain exposure to the pipeline from early Drug Discovery to Development, contributing to the reduction of cycle times for lead molecule identification.
* You will be part of the Genentech post-doctoral training program that provides an outstanding environment and the opportunity to pursue fundamental basic science questions in an environment focused on drug development and breakthrough discoveries.
Who You Are:
* Ph.D. with a proven track record of excellence in Chemical Engineering, Bioengineering, Molecular Biology, Cell Biology, or a related field.
* Must have advanced at least one key research project as evidenced by a first-author paper published or accepted in a leading peer-reviewed journal.
* Independent scientist with outstanding communication skills, a strong passion and commitment to science and bioprocess innovation, who works well within a team.
* Excited about applying genetic and molecular engineering to solve complex challenges in protein production.
Preferred Qualifications:
* Hands-on experience with mammalian cell culture (specifically CHO cells) and transient expression systems is highly desired.
* Experience with molecular biology techniques, including vector design, cloning, and genetic engineering (e.g., CRISPR/Cas9, transposon-mediated systems).
* Working knowledge of transfection methods or engineered transcription/translation systems is a plus.
* Familiarity with high-throughput screening or automated liquid handling systems is advantageous.
The expected salary range for this position based on the primary location of South San Francisco California is $100,000 to $106,500. Actual pay will be determined based on experience, qualifications, geographic location, and other job-related factors permitted by law. This position offers an exciting opportunity to use state-of-the-art peptide display technologies - including phage and mRNA display of macrocyclic and cystine-knot peptide libraries - to discover peptides that modulate the function of therapeutically relevant protein targets. A major focus will be on members of the type II transmembrane serine protease family, cell-surface enzymes implicated in disease processes such as viral entry. In parallel, you will engineer disulfide-constrained peptide libraries designed to engage challenging, flat protein-protein interfaces, using a newly developed scaffold with a unique surface topology, and will leverage machine-learning-assisted methods for peptide sequence optimization. To elucidate mechanisms of peptide activity, the successful candidate will apply a broad range of biochemical, biophysical, structural, and cellular methods.
The ideal applicant is an independent, creative scientist who thrives in a collaborative, team-oriented environment. The position offers extensive opportunities to interact with the vibrant Genentech postdoctoral community as well as scientists across multiple departments.
Who You Are:
A Ph.D. in biochemistry, biophysics, structural biology or related discipline and a proven record of productivity in their graduate career as demonstrated by first-author publications.
Preferred Qualifications:
Strong experience in molecular biology
Expertise in engineering, expressing and purifying proteins
Experience with directed evolution (yeast, phage, mRNA display, etc.) is preferred
Experience in peptide chemistry is a plus
Proficiency in surface plasmon resonance or biolayer interferometry
Proficient in structural biology (crystallography and or cryo-EM) is a plus
Experience with tissue culture, cell-based assays
Strong analytical, collaborative, communication and organizational skills

Postdoctoral Fellow, Proteomics and Neuroscience, Ori/Bingol Lab
Genentech 4.5
Doctoral fellow job at Genentech
We advance science so that we all have more time with the people we love.
The Proteomics and Genomics Technologies department develops and employs innovative proteomic and genomic technologies to advance basic research programs as well as support a multitude of modalities across Genentech's therapeutic pipeline. The Neuroscience department aims to discover novel pathogenic mechanisms of neurodegeneration with the ultimate aim of targeting them to alleviate disease.
A position is available for a postdoctoral fellow with expertise in molecular and cellular neuroscience, iPSC-derived models, and omics data to join the Departments of Proteomics and Genomics Technologies and Neuroscience at Genentech, Inc. We have in-house cutting-edge technologies including proteomics, lipidomics, NGS, CRISPR screens, in vitro and in vivo models, and AI/ML-supported computational biology.
The Opportunity
Active areas of research include mechanistic investigation of the impact of disease on key cellular organelles including mitochondria and lysosomes, and high-throughput proteome profiling of perturbations in iPSC-derived brain cell types.
The project will entail a combination of unbiased discovery and hypothesis-driven research to derive causal relationships between pathways contributing to neurodegeneration.
You will be responsible for the generation of large-scale datasets, derivation of causal models and follow up mechanistic investigations of novel findings.
You will work at the interface between disciplines and leverage expertise from different research areas including proteomics, functional genomics, computational biology and neuroscience.
Who You Are:
Candidates must have a Ph.D. in biology, biophysics, biochemistry or a related discipline.
Team player with a fearless attitude to tackle long standing, difficult problems in neuroscience.
Strong background in culturing and manipulating iPSC-derived models, organelle biology, CRISPR screens or neuroscience as evidenced by a first author paper published or accepted in peer-reviewed journals.
Preferred Qualifications:
Strong computational skills to derive mechanistic insights would be advantageous.
Highly motivated and capable of independent work in a collaborative and multidisciplinary environment.
Previous experience with proteomics is not required.
