They are able to recognize dental diseases early enough and provide treatment before it advances. General dentists also advise patients on proper ways to handle their oral hygiene to avoid problems in the future.

They usually work in hospitals, outpatient clinics, community clinics, and private dental clinics. In order to succeed in their role, they should have extensive knowledge and experience in dental practices, analytical skills, attention to detail, communication skills and manual dexterity.

General dentists usually work 40 hours a week Monday to Friday from 9 to 5. Some work in institutions where they work in shifts while those working in private practice are able to set their working hours. Their work schedule largely depends on patient availability.
