Pros of working at General Electric

Career and physical mobility. Formalized training programs. Some focus on leadership but what was a meaningful ritual has become a rote process as the original visionary has moved on. Decent benefits for health, 401K and employee services. Travel for company is done fairly not extravagant but not pauper either, none of the cheap shared motel rooms that Wal Mart and other companies do.

Cons of working at General Electric

Career mobility is mandatory for success leading to a career path that is fractured and heavily emphasized on becoming management rather than expert. R&D focus is insulated with weak vision and located in undesirable and hostile city that does not support such efforts. Some managers are children of executives leading to poorly run departments with inbred ideas. Salary is approximately 10-25% below most other outside similar roles. Employs use of crucible departments as test for transition to executives leading to fragmented disjointed 2-year projects that end in dismantling and restart with next manager on 2/4-year to executive path. Company structure deliberately designed for conflict leading to severe division DIVISION and siloization. Employees of one division were openly hostile to others indicating severely degraded internal communications. The Union while leading to employee benefits throughout the company is suffocating in states where union closed shops are allowed.

The 401K Loan policy was very good. Also, nothing like having a 800lb gorilla in the room while negotiating. Working in a non union state is preferred.

Good people and great pay. Started out as an investment job that you would keep until retirement. The benefits were good.

No advancement. The job you had at the beginning was the job you kept until you left, retired, or died. The benefits kept dropping over time and the pension was eventually cut out.

Cons of working at General Electric

The 20/60/20 rule when managers must trim the bottom 20% of their staff. Most teams find an angle to keep their supposed "c" players (these underperformers are few and far between) which can lead to teams broken apart unnecessarily. But we suffer together which I guess is the point of the exercise.

I work for GE Aviation Digital (crazy name I know). And honestly it feels more like a software company than anything else. Predix is still young in its development but it's been really fun to see it grow and become more utilized over the past few months. This week there's actually a huge Predix developer conference in Las Vegas going on right now. It's a big misconception that GE didn't know how to do software. While that may have been true 5 years ago this is 100% a software focused company now. This is especially true since GE Digital was created. GE has a goal to be a top 10 software company in the world by 2020 and they're committing to it like crazy. They've been pretty aggressive with hiring, paying me more than I even asked for in interviews. They're also trying to expand in the 100's in terms of developers this year. It's a good time to get into the company. Ask away if you have any more specific questions

> Predix is still young in its development but it's been really fun to see it grow and become more utilized I'm taking part in the GE-sponsored hackathon that focuses on Predix. I really like the idea and I think it has huge potential, but it appears to be in its infancy at the moment: - The docs are pretty bad. Very hard to navigate, some code snippets are screenshots (some of them badly cropped, all of them so little you can't read them), there's some typos. - Turns out that you have access to roughly 12 sensors. This might be hackathon specific, but I got super excited about having live data for at least some tens or hundreds of sensors. - The auth schema for Predix (getting tokens, etc.) is fairly standard, but I wish more info was in the docs ie. standard token lifetime, a list of HTTP headers and their purpose. Maybe I just didn't understand _how young_ Predix really is. It left me a bit disappointed, but your post cleared a lot of things up for me. I'll take you up on the "ask away" if you don't mind: what kind of developers are they looking for (network, security, embedded, etc.)? Does GE have some kind of growth program ie. mentors, code review, books/conference budgets? What's GE's take on open source tools? Do you use OS tools a lot? Does GE contribute or plan to contribute to open source? How's the management's approach to developers - do they see it as a profit center or cost center? Does management have IT/CS experience? I hope this isn't too much, but I would really love to hear how GE is approaching transitioning into the software space.
