The person in this position will receive on the job training to become qualified as a Conductor. Conductors operate track switches, couples and uncouples cars, and performs other duties associated with the movement of trains, cars, and engines in rail yards and on the main railroad. He or she receives, relays, or acts upon oral, written, or radio instructions from the dispatcher, yardmaster, or other personnel indicating the switch movement, placement, or delivery of railroad cars and/or a train.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
· Receives and takes direction from a certified trainer
· Conduct railcar and train movements; signal crew members for movement of the engine or train using lantern, hand, and/or flag signals or radio to indicate when to start, stop, back up, or set or release air brakes
· Observe, interpret, and relay arm, lantern or radio signals and all other indications affecting movement of a train
· Operate track switches (visually check switch condition and direction) to change the direction of the engine or cars within yard limits or on the main railroad; apply or release hand brakes to switch or perform other duties
· Read and understand the book of rules, timetables, bulletins, train orders, waybills, placards, safety instructions, and other written or printed material
· Prepare required daily reports and switch lists, either manually or with a computer; fill out forms, including train orders
· Inspect the condition of the train and equipment in movement and while stationary
· Couple air and electrical connections between locomotives when making up trains
· Assist with other projects and perform other duties as assigned
REQUIRED SKILLS AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
· Two years of work experience or relevant work experience a plus
· Ability to work in a 24/7 work environment and in outdoor working conditions
REQUIRED EDUCATION AND/OR CREDENTIALS:
· High school diploma or GED; or an equivalent combination of education and/or work experience

Frequency of essential functions, marginal functions, machine/equipment/tools used, physical requirements, and working conditions may change somewhat due to the type of railcar, weather, and location operating restriction, but ALL MAINTENANCE SPECIALISTS perform basically the same work.
1. Repairs, modifies, and upgrades rail cars.
2. Rebuilds car components: bolsters, side framers, hitch heads, and box car doors.
3. Welds (30% of time), fabricates, and uses cutting torch.
4. Performs mechanical labor (frequently - 95% of time).
5. Repairs and maintains railcars, according to blueprints and other specifications, using hand tools, power tools, and precision measuring instruments. Inspects machines and equipment visually by touch, special knowledge and training, to locate causes of trouble.
6. Operates forklift to move, align, and set in place parts in place.
7. Measures, cuts and threads pipes and replaces air lines using hand tools.

Education / Training
* < 1-year experience, or no previous experience as a welder;
* High School Diploma or equivalent
Key Job Elements
This position is responsible to operate various hand-welding and flame-cutting equipment to weld, fabricate or join work pieces together. Work involves safe use of various hand and power tools common to the welding trade along with various welding methods such as MIG or Stick.
Minimum duties and responsibilities:
* Pass internal welding certification in conjunction with requirements under ISO, AAR, and other regulatory agencies;
* Retrieve materials assembled and weld into a finished product;
* Set up components for welding according to specifications (e.g. cut material with powered saws to match
measurements);
* Operate angle grinders to prepare the parts that must be welded;
* Interpret welding blueprints, assembly instructions, drawings, JSA's, and bills of material;
* Maintaining welding proficiency as required by Progress Rail QSP 4.9 as well as any applicable local and
international standards;
* Candidate must be able to accurately use measuring devices such as tape measures, scales, and calipers. Must be able to measure and record the required inspection information;
* Candidate must be able to use various hand tools as well as pneumatic and electric powered grinders and impact wrenches, as well as overhead cranes to transport components into and out of the work area.
Qualifications and Experience
