Since opening its doors on Thursday, April 20, 1848, the college’s dedication to educating students—traditional, adult learners and graduate—without regard to gender, race or creed has earned Geneva a well-deserved reputation for accessibility.
Geneva College was founded in 1848 in Northwood, Ohio, by John Black Johnston, a minister of the RPCNA. The college was founded as "Geneva Hall", and was named after the Swiss center of the Reformed faith movement.
But by the time the institution was renamed in honor of its founder in 1852, campus had become much livelier, with lacrosse games against Native Americans spilling off the Quad and into the local neighborhood.
Opened its doors to freed southern slaves around 1865, an uncommon practice during the post-Civil War period
In 1879, Geneva College relocated to Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania, where it continues to operate today.
After briefly closing during the American Civil War, the college continued operating in Northwood until 1880.
