Summary:
Dialysis RNs specialize in caring for patients with acute or chronic kidney failure who are undergoing hemodialysis treatment. They monitor patients' vital signs, operate and maintain dialysis equipment, administer medications, and educate patients on kidney disease management. They collaborate with nephrologists and other healthcare professionals to ensure safe, effective, and compassionate care that is tailored to each patient's needs.
Essential Work Functions:
Assess and monitor patients' vital signs before, during, and after dialysis treatment to ensure stability and safety
Oversee the dialysis treatment from start to finish, including cannulating accesses, securing blood work, and documenting findings
Administer prescribed medications accurately, following physician orders and documenting appropriately
Assure proper maintenance of equipment and provision of adequate supplies
Adhere to infection control protocols when cleaning and dressing permanent and temporary catheters to prevent complications
Document patient conditions, dialysis treatments, and care interventions accurately and in compliance with regulatory standards
Respond promptly to emergencies during dialysis, such as hypotension or cardiac events, to ensure patient safety
Educate patients and their families about kidney disease, hemodialysis, medication management, and lifestyle adjustments to support long-term health
Participate in quality improvement initiatives to enhance the effectiveness and safety of dialysis care
Stay informed on advancements in nephrology and dialysis technology to incorporate best practices into patient care
Perform other duties as assigned within the scope of practice
Adhere to hospital safety protocols, infection control guidelines, and regulatory standards

Duties and Responsibilities
