1920

Thus, the League of Nations officially started its activities on 10 January 1920.

The League of Nations, predecessor of the United Nations, was established here in 1920.

1939

Important members such as Germany, Italy, and Japan left the organization, and by the time the Second World War broke out in 1939, many had abandoned the League of Nations and had instead returned to the traditional system of defensive alliances and power blocs.

In 1945, 50 governments came together to form the United Nations: an organization with remarkable similarities to the League of Nations but built on a more resilient structure, with committed members, and equipped with more effective tools to prevent or contain conflicts.

Although the UN moved to New York in 1945, Geneva is still home to one of its European offices.

1960

In 1960 Genève was one of the first Swiss cantons to extend the vote to women, but participation in elections and referendums remained unusually low.

1994

Under the auspices of the United Nations Children’s Fund, the International Convention on the Rights of Children was negotiated in Geneva in 1994.

1995

In 1995 the World Trade Organization was established with Geneva as its headquarters.

1998

The Journal de Genève, long the city’s leading French-language newspaper and one of the premier papers in the world, merged with Le Nouveau Quotidien to become Le Temps in 1998.

2019
