What you'll be challenged to do:

What you will bring to our firm:

Your Opportunity
The Senior Paleontologist will work as part of a dynamic team that is based in Southern California but includes staff members across the United States. Stantec Paleontology is one of the largest paleontological mitigation programs in the country, holding numerous statewide Bureau of Land Management and project-specific United States Forest Service and National Park Service paleontological permits. Our team includes over 30 paleontologists, including field technicians and directors, fossil preparators, and principal investigators. Stantec supports a wide range of paleontology projects, from multi-state transmission and pipeline projects to road improvements, solar fields, private development, and more. We offer support through all stages of permitting and development, including preconstruction surveys and assessments, construction mitigation programs, and fossil treatment. Our Monrovia, California and Denver, Colorado offices include fossil preparation workspaces, with museum-quality preparation equipment.
Within this team, the Senior Paleontologist will direct compliance projects for state, federal, and commercial clients and is responsible for overseeing project development, direction, coordination, and quality control, under the guidance of the Principal Paleontologist. Additionally, the Senior Paleontologist will train staff, oversee field directors, produce quality reports, manage multiple projects and budgets, author proposals and participate in marketing, as required.
Your Key Responsibilities
- Preparation and review of paleontological technical reports, CEQA/NEPA documents, impact mitigation plans, and annual permit reports.
- Preparation of cost proposals including budgets and scopes of work.
- Project management: implementation of projects from kickoff to completion, including client and agency coordination, project scheduling, coordination of support staff, and budget management.
Implementation of resource impact mitigation measures including monitoring and fossil collection projects of all types and sizes.
- Participation in and logistical planning for field projects from inception to completion across the western US.
- Supervision and training of field crews, management and QA/QC of field data, and coordination with land management agencies and clients.
- Detailed and accurate field data collection (including ability to collect data using table computers and
- Trimble GPS units) with an emphasis on stratigraphic documentation of project sites and fossil localities therein.
- Participation in and supervision of existing data analyses including museum and agency record searches, geologic map reviews, and literature-based research.
- Assistance with marketing and business development efforts.
- Adherence to ethical business practices, professional standards, laws and regulations, and best practices in mitigation paleontology.
Qualifications
Your Capabilities and Credentials
- Demonstrated professional experience and competency with paleontological resource mitigation procedures and techniques.
- Meet federal qualifications as a paleontological permittee (43 Code of Federal Regulations Part 49.110)
- Working knowledge of how paleontological resources and their associated data are used in conducting and publishing professional paleontological research.

What You Can Do for Us Now:
Plan and conduct detailed field explorations involving field mapping, drilling, test pits, trenches and collection and characterization of soil and bedrock samples
Characterize and evaluate soil, rock, groundwater and other natural conditions prior to major construction projects
Identify and develop mitigation measures for potential geological hazards affecting life, land, and property.
Perform geotechnical laboratory tests
Perform well-defined field, analytical, and project administrative responsibilities as required
Build geologic models, interpret subsurface stratigraphy, and draw cross sections to aid in geotechnical engineering reporting
Contribute to preparation of a diverse range of reports and technical documents with a focus on accuracy, clarity, succinctness, and document QA/QC
Work with Project Managers and Principals in developing creative environmental and geotechnical project strategies and providing strong client representation and advocacy to regulatory agencies

Job Overview:
We are currently looking to expand our Tucson, Arizona office by hiring a full-time Staff Geophysicist, Geoscientist, Hydrologist, or Engineer. Job Overview:
We are currently looking to expand our Tucson, AZ office by hiring a full-time Staff Geophysicist, Geoscientist, Hydrologist, or Engineer. Beyond fieldwork, the candidate will help process, model, and visualize earth science and geophysical data, as well as integrating GPS and/or surveying data, on a daily or project basis.
Job Responsibilities/Duties:
Will work outdoors with uneven terrain while carrying heavy equipment (50+ lbs.).
Work independently and with the team.
Problem solve, at times make temporary in-field repairs, and adapt to changing conditions.
Loading and unloading of equipment for field projects.
Vehicle and equipment transport to and from field projects.
Set up, tear down and maintenance of field monitoring equipment.
Other field support as directed by project lead.
Field projects range from two days to two months and requires extensive travel regionally, nationally and globally. This will include remote locations with limited communications and facilities, extreme environmental conditions (health, cold, altitudes, etc.), and possible industrial hazards.
Organization and maintenance of field equipment in accordance with company procedure.
General office support as required when not in the field.
Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in Geophysics, Geosciences, Geology, or Earth Science related Engineering discipline with 2-4 years of applied experience, inclusive of geophysical field work utilizing data acquisition equipment, OR a Master's degree in Geophysics, Geosciences, Geology, or Earth Science related Engineering, Hydrology, or Environmental discipline with little to no experience.
Degree must include advanced math and physics. A transcript will be required.
Ability to flourish with minimal guidance, be proactive, and handle uncertainty.
Outstanding communication skills, both written and verbal, as well as being organized and detail-oriented.
Schedule flexibility, priorities can change quickly as we are a service based company and have to react quickly to client demands.
Enjoy travel (nationally and internationally), remote destinations, and working outdoors with complex scientific equipment. The position requires up to 70+% travel. Field projects can range from two days to two months and require extensive travel regionally, nationally and globally.
Valid driver's license and a clean driving record.
A current passport or ability to secure a passport within 90 days of hire date.

Preferred Qualifications:
Prior experience with geophysical fieldwork and data collection, environmental sampling/logging, laboratory or scientific instrumentation is encouraged.
If experienced, proficiency in electrical, seismic, and electromagnetic methods is a plus.
Professional Geophysicist (PGP) and/or Professional Geologist (PG)/Certified Hydrogeologist (CHG), or a willingness to apply/study for a PGP license.
Bilingual English/Spanish speaking skills.
Experience driving a vehicle/trailer combination.
MSHA/OSHA/Hazwoper training.

Geologist job in Phoenix, AZ
CDM Smith is looking for a Geologist to join our Environmental Services Group in Phoenix, Arizona! As part of our team, you will perform basic to moderate site evaluations including: geologic and seismic evaluations, and hydrogeologic analyses (such as aquifer test analysis, geochemical analysis, geotechnical analysis, and contaminant transport analysis) in both surface and subsurface geologic conditions related to contaminant assessments. Your tasks may include lithologic and geophysical well logging, water sampling, surface geological mapping, aquifer performance testing, soils characterization, and data compilation and evaluation. You will prepare cross sections, iso-contour and iso-concentration maps, and perform QA/QC analyses. You will develop draft evaluations and calculations to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations and ensure that firm policies and practices are followed on all projects. You could attend conferences and/or contribute to the firm's Technical Knowledge Management (TKM) by developing white papers and technical design documentation for new or special case designs for publication in technical journals.
