George Fox University company history timeline

1891

9, 1891, with the opening of the doors of Pacific College.

1893

In 1893 the school was incorporated as a joint-stock company.

1949

The school’s name changed to George Fox College in 1949 to honor George Fox, the founder of the Quaker movement.

1959

The college remained a small and intimate learning environment in the years following and received accreditation in 1959.

1980

Attendance was low and 80-90% Quaker—the college didn’t have over 700 students until 1980.

1986

Among the additions was adult education: George Fox became the first college in the Northwest to offer degree-completion programs for working adults in 1986.

The student body has grown more than 500% since 1986, when enrollment was 549.

1991

If anyone is interested in further learning about the Friends heritage of the university, Ralph Beebe, a former history professor at GFU, wrote a book entitled “A Heritage to Honor, a Future to Fulfill” in 1991 for the 100th anniversary of the university.

1996

In 1996, the college merged with Western Evangelical Seminary to form George Fox University.

2000

Associate professor of biology Dwight Kimberly received the Carnegie Foundation's Oregon Professor of the Year award in 2000.

2015

In 2015, the school completed a new residence hall, Brandt Hall, named for former school president David H. Brandt and his wife, Melva.

2016

A new dining hall, Canyon Commons, opened in the fall of 2016.
