Georgetown County, S.C. company history timeline

1800

Then a series of hurricanes in the 1800's delivered the final blow and ended the rice culture in Georgetown.

1840

By 1840, the Georgetown District (County) was the wealthiest area in the 13 original colonies, producing nearly one-half of the total rice crop of the country and exporting more rice than any port in the world.

1855

The iconic structure was built by renowned architect Robert Mills, (1781 to 1855) who is also the architect of the Washington Monument, in addition to other magnificent structures across the nation, including the Ainsley Hall House in Columbia, South Carolina.

1932

However, in 1932, during the Great Depression, the lumber company declared bankruptcy and Georgetown entered a period of immense economic decline along with many other areas of the country.

1936

Recovery began in 1936 when International Paper Co. built a plant in Georgetown.

2016

By the end of 2016, no ships brought cargo in or took cargo out of the Port of Georgetown, mostly due to silting of the channel leading to the port in Winyah Bay.
