Georgetown Healthcare System Inc history

In the mid-1990’s, community leaders identified a need for a coordinated approach to social services in order to effectively address Georgetown’s rapid growth and changing demographics.

On May 7, 1998, Medlantic Healthcare Group, the Hospital Center's not-for-profit parent company, merged with Helix Health, a group of four Baltimore, Md.-based hospitals, making the combined company the largest health care provider in the mid-Atlantic region.

On February 1, 1999, Helix/Medlantic is renamed MedStar Health, the parent company of MedStar Washington Hospital Center.

Delmarva Foundation for Medical Care proudly recognizes MedStar Health and its Maryland-area hospitals for winning Delmarva's Excellence Award for Quality Improvement, a record 18 times since its inception in 2001.

MedStar Health received the 2005 Bridging the Gap Pioneer Award.

In 2006, Georgetown Healthcare System partnered with St David’s HealthCare by contributing Georgetown Hospital.

MedStar Family Choice, a Maryland Medicaid Managed Care Organization, has been named the top-ranked Medicaid health plan in Maryland by the United States News and NCQA America's Best Health Insurance Plans 2009-10.

MedStar Health is featured in the February 2010 issue of Baltimore magazine as one of the region's "Best Places to Work."

MedStar Diabetes Institute is recognized as winner of Microsoft Health Users Group 2011 Innovation Award.

Becker’s Hospital Review names MedStar Health as one of the 150 Great Places to Work in Health Care in 2014.

MedStar St Mary’s Hospital recognized with 2015 Quality Innovation Award from the Virginia Health Quality Center (VHQC).

MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center, MedStar Good Samaritan, MedStar Harbor and MedStar Union Memorial Hospitals honored with the 2016 “Partner for Change” award by Practice Greenhealth.
