Georgia Southwestern State University company history timeline

1907

Academic Hall (pictured here before the fire) was built in 1907 and housed eight classrooms, a large auditorium, the superintendent's office and the College Cadet armory.

1918

The building was rebuilt under the supervision of architect and trustee Charles Wheatley, for whom the new building was named upon its completion in 1918.

One of many instances of hands-on experience, Doctor Evan Kutzler's "The Study of History" class takes a tour of Oak Grove Cemetery in Americus, Georgia to find influenza victims from the 1918 pandemic.

1932

The Institution became a unit of the University System of Georgia in 1932 and changed the name to Georgia Southwestern College.

The college joined the University System of Georgia (USG) in 1932 along with other state-supported institutions of higher learning in Georgia due to a legislative enactment.

1964

In 1964, the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia authorized Georgia Southwestern College to begin its transition to a four-year degree-granting institution.

1968

The first bachelor's degrees were conferred in June 1968.

1983

The Master of Science in Administration was added in the winter of 1983.

2007

A historic portion of the campus was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2007 as the "Third District A & M School–Georgia Southwestern College Historic District".

2022
