Georgian Resort history

Beginning in 1913, Italian tenor, Enrico Caruso, and the rest of the Metropolitan Opera, used the landmark Georgian Terrace as their home base for whenever they were in town performing their spring concert.

1918: The renowned Arthur Murray started teaching dance lessons inside the Grand Ballroom while studying as a student at Georgia Tech University.

She even helped found the American Civil Liberties Union in 1920.

Yet, Fox Theatre closed just weeks after opening in the fall of 1929.

First established in 1933, The Georgian was built as the vision of Attorney and Judge Harry J. Borde.

1946: By this point, many illustrious guests had visited The Georgian Terrace.

1970: Concert promoter Alex Cooley’s famed “Electric Ballroom” opened at The Georgian Terrace, hosting headliners that included Bruce Springsteen, Patti Smith, Billy Joel, and the Pretenders.

As it has since it’s post-renovation reopening in 1986, it now serves as a residential location, but with commercial operations on the lobby level.

A member of Historic Hotels of America since 2001, The Georgian Terrace is truly among the best historic destinations in all of Georgia.

2009: The Georgian Terrace completed a massive series of renovations that had lasted for several months.

Proudly exposing its original stained glass Palladian windows, restored mosaic tile floors, & statement-worthy black walnut doors, Georgian Hall was nominated for and won, an Outstanding Restoration award from the Athens-Clarke Heritage Foundation, a local preservation organization, in 2016.
