Geoscientist job description

This position is open to our San Antonio, Austin, or Houston location.

The Geoscientist III responsibilities encompass supporting a successful business practice in RABA KISTNERS Geosciences Service Line. Responsibilities include leading, scheduling and performing field activities for complex Geoscience projects. This will include but not be limited to site visits, data collection, geologic mapping, geophysical assessments and soils or groundwater sampling activities. Geologist III responsibilities also include preparation of cost proposals and technical reports including graphics and detailed analysis of project data. The Geoscientist III will also lead and/or perform internal projects as needed including but not limited to the development of internal documents, databases, and statements of qualifications. The Geoscientist III will independently and successfully oversee or manage project budgets, subcontractors and clients and competently oversee, teach, mentor and train staff on performance of technical and other Geologist duties.

Employee shall have the following minimum duties and responsibilities:

* Lead and/or conduct Phase I and/or Phase II ESAs in addition to field work and data reduction as necessary for Geosciences and Due Diligence projects with minimal supervision
* Lead and/or conduct field work and data reduction as needed to support projects executed by other Environmental Service Lines (Natural Resources, Regulatory Compliance, Cultural Resources).
* Interpret technical information and prepare project reports and other deliverables with minimal supervision.
* Design ground water sampling and analysis plans and install ground water monitoring wells to include well installation, purging and sampling.
* Design sampling and analysis plans and collect soil, surface and ground water samples.
* Actively contribute to the design and development of remediation plans and supervise/conduct the field work.
* Coordinate activities of subcontractors on single or multiple assigned projects.
* Lead and/or Conduct preparation of proposals and statements of qualifications (SOQs).
* Conduct research and/or conduct "walk-throughs" of project sites for the purpose of preparing proposals for projects.
* Competently assist in management of or oversee project budget and resources facilitate profitable project execution.
* Proactively mentor and train others in the execution of technical duties and/or project financial management tasks.
* Perform other duties as assigned by Direct Report.
* Frequently lift and/or move up to 45 pounds to include, but not limited to tools, sample containers and equipment.
* Potential exposure to movement of heavy equipment on construction or roadway sites; potential exposure to hazardous dangerous chemicals and solvents, noise, dust, fumes, grease and oils, radiant and electrical energy, and vibration; all of which would require employee to follow proper safety procedures and utilize appropriate protective equipment.
* Position may require protracted or irregular hours. Flexibility to work irregular hours is necessary due to client needs. Work responsibilities require out of town travel to Raba Kistner offices, client offices and project locations.

Employees shall possess the following minimum qualifications:

* Bachelors degree in Geology. Masters degree in Geology or related field preferred.
* 5-7 years applicable geosciences experience.
* Registered/Licensed Geoscientist in State of Texas
* Strong working knowledge of Texas geologic conditions with demonstrated proficiency in the San Antonio, Austin, Dallas, and Houston metroplexes.
* Strong knowledge of Phase I and Phase II ESA requirements, components, procedures and protocols.
* Strong knowledge of soil, groundwater and surface water collection, storage and COC protocols.
* Demonstrated ability to lead field and technical staff and serve as single point of contact for organization and scheduling of field activities.
* Demonstrated understanding and practical application of project financial management fundamentals.
* Ability to quickly establish proficiency with RKE procedures and protocols for performing Geosciences and Due Diligence project work.
* Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite of software.
* 40 hour OSHA HAZWOPER/8-hour refresher.
* Possess valid Texas drivers license and meet companys automobile insurability requirements.
* Strong oral communication skills to interact with clients, staff, and regulatory staff (e.g., Texas Commission on Environmental Quality) successfully.
* Excellent written communication skills for preparing proposals, reports, and other technical documents.
* Excellent organizational skills.
* Ability to travel to project sites and maneuver over rough and uneven terrain and/or slippery surfaces.
* Walk, stand, crawl, kneel, climb and perform repeated bending as needed when executing field work.
* Distinguish colors and shades of color for identification and analysis.
* Must pass a drug test prior to employment and will be subject to post-accident, random, and reasonable cause testing during employment.
* Comply with all attendance requirements as noted in most current edition of the Employee Handbook.

**Description**

Supervise, provide technical guidance, interpret, manage projects/tasks and/or participate in activities to maintain operational performance and support projects with focus on Tailings and Crushed Leach facilities. Activities include inspection, measurement, interpretation, analysis, coordination, problem solving, forecasting, reporting, and may include project design support. Review and improve the performance of existing tailings, crushed leach, and water management systems.

+ Supervise, guide and participate in activities to maintain performance of tailings, crushed leach, and water dam facilities through inspection, measurement, data management, interpretation, analysis, coordination, problem solving and reporting.

+ Review, improve and apply tailings, crushed leach, and water management systems to achieve good practice.

+ Provide guidance and instruction to multidisciplinary teams; assign tasks as necessary. Review reports for design and operations projects and provide recommendations to site team and to project consultants.

+ Collaborate to continuously ensure good performance of tailings, crushed leach, and water management areas and to identify and implement associated improvements. This includes engaging the Engineer of Record in the design and operations of TSF and WD facilities. Serve as point of contact with corporate engineers and management, including tracking all recommendations, ensuring compliance with those recommendations, reporting actions regularly, as well as communicate accurate, timely and relevant information to the Site management team.

+ Supervise or may serve as Project Manager or technical expert on large/complex site planning/construction, expansion or modifications.

+ Contribute to site strategic planning and budgeting efforts for Tailings Storage, Crushed Leach and Water areas. Manage appropriate budgets for consulting and other services such as drilling and construction contractors.

+ Develop and/or review scopes of work, evaluate proposals, draft formalized internal requests for funding, and administer contracts with vendors for the provision of services and equipment as approved and required.

+ Identify opportunities for improvements and determine associated value for risk reduction measures.

+ Perform other duties as required.

**Qualifications**

Minimum Requirements:

+ Bachelor's degree in a relevant Scientific discipline with five (5) years of experience in applicable field of expertise, OR

+ Master's degree in a relevant Scientific discipline with three (3) years of experience in Engineering or related scientific field

+ Knowledge of principles and practice of Civil, Geotechnical, Water Resources, Water Quality/Treatment, Hydrogeology, Geochemistry, and/or Geological Engineering

+ Demonstrated technical competence through design and/or operations experience in at least one of the following work areas: tailings storage, leach stockpiles, water dams, process water balance, reclamation and closure planning

+ Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing in English to a diversely educated audience

+ Proficient in MS Office and other Engineering tools (CAD, analytical, mapping)

+ Present a positive, professional image

Preferred Qualifications:

+ Master's degree in related Scientific discipline

+ Professional Geologist, Professional Engineer or equivalent relevant certification or licensure

+ Experience with metal mining operations, especially with tailings storage facility (dam), water dams and/or crushed leach stockpile design and operations

+ Experience with geotechnical or hydrogeological field investigation programs, lab testing, site characterization, monitoring programs, data management, and analysis

+ Experience reviewing and editing analysis and design reports and documents for a variety of applications

+ Experience in surface water hydrology, hydraulics, and groundwater hydrology in addition to geotechnical experience

+ Able to research and analyze information of relatively small scope and minimal difficulty and draw valid conclusions

+ Able to evaluate and implement new methods and techniques in design projects and operational support

+ Superior interpersonal as well as written and oral communication skills with diverse teams of technical and non-technical staff

+ Skilled in related Engineering software (AutoCAD/Civil 3D, ArcGIS, GoldSim), programming languages

+ Fluency in Spanish or Bahasa Indonesian languages

Criteria/Conditions:

+ Ability and willingness to travel domestic / international

+ Ability and willingness to travel at least five (5) weeks for every quarter

+ Personal protective equipment is required when performing work in a mine, outdoor, manufacturing or plant environment, including hard hat, hearing protection, safety glasses, safety footwear, and as needed, respirator, rubber steel-toe boots, protective clothing, gloves and any other protective equipment as required.

Stantec is seeking a detail oriented, well organized, dependable, Environmental/Geological Specialist with excellent interpersonal skills, a strong technical background in environmental remediation, project/task management experience, and general knowledge and understanding of environmental regulations and health & safety procedures to join our team.

The successful candidate will be responsible for conducting environmental remediation/investigation tasks and providing site assessment, remedial investigation, and remedial action support for complex environmental remediation projects at sites with multi-media investigations. Experience with Coal Combustion Residuals (CCR) facilities is a plus. Responsibilities will include:

**Your Key Responsibilities**

_Field data collection and analysis including:_

+ logging soil and rock core in subsurface explorations, including installing monitoring wells and piezometers

+ perform aquifer testing and groundwater flow evaluations

+ soil, groundwater and surface water sampling

+ supervising field drilling and related operations, networking with large teams

+ Generating complete, accurate, and concise documentation using electronic systems and field/work site notebook.

_Office work will include:_

+ Working effectively with multi-disciplinary project teams of scientists, engineers, chemists, geologists, hydrogeologists, risk assessors, and field personnel to achieve project goals and objectives.

+ Assisting with the development and implementation of site investigation plans to identify and delineate chemicals of concern in soil, sediment, groundwater, and vapor for domestic and international clients.

+ Assisting in developing more junior staff in technical and consulting excellence.

+ Assuring the quality of all work and product deliverables and achievement of project objectives to the client's satisfaction.

+ Designing and using relational databases to manage and report analytical and other field data

+ Groundwater modeling, calibration via data updates, remediation strategy projection and performance monitoring.

**Qualifications**

**Your Capabilties and Capabilities**

+ Intent to become Registered Geologist in Georgia and other states is preferred.

+ 40 hr Hazwoper (OSHA Hazardous Worker) certification is desired but not required

+ Position requires strict adherence to health and safety procedures, attention to detail, good work ethic, and a passion for high quality workmanship.

+ Must be willing to directly execute field geologic explorations, monitoring well installations, environmental sampling and related logs and documentation.

+ Experience GIS and EQuIS preferred

+ Interest in Leapfrog software or ambition to become proficient in support of related hydrogeologic modeling is a plus.

+ Familiar with AutoCad is preferred, but not required

+ Must be proficient in MS Office Suite (e.g., Word, Excel, etc.)

+ A valid US driver's license and good driving record are required.

+ Ability to lift 40 pounds is required.

+ Ability to work outside under adverse weather conditions is required.
