1910

1910-50s: The Beginnings of a Community Staple

Business leaders in a small town rich in German-American heritage, Jasper, Indiana, organized and opened a bank in 1910.

1940

In the 1940’s, the bank was ready to expand and purchased the office building it occupied.

1952

There was no similar outpouring for Eisenhower in 1952, who won in spite of only mild German support.

1962

1962: The first branch office, in Dubois, Indiana, is opened.

1964

Clem Eckstein headed the bank for only two years, and upon his death in 1964, O. Leo Beckman became German American's fourth president.

1980

The Ferdinand office, which opened for business on March 17, 1980, was housed in a newly built two-story structure.

In 1980, the bank established a branch in Ferdinand, Indiana, a small town to the south of Jasper.

The 1980 census revealed that people of German heritage were the largest ethnic group in the United States, raising the question what significance this fact holds.

1983

In 1983, the owners of German American Bank formed a holding company--German American Bancorp (GAB)&mdash preparation for taking advantage of merger opportunities.

1983: The German American Bancorp holding company is established.

1986

In May 1986, GAB made its first acquisition when it purchased the Bank of Ireland.

1987

In the early part of 1987, the company opened still another office, in the community of Huntingburg, Indiana.

1988

New York: German Information Center, 1988.

1990

In the 1990 United States census, 58 million Americans claimed sole German or part-German descent, demonstrating the persistence of the German heritage in the United States.

1993

1993: Bancorp goes public on NASDAQ.

1994

1994: An aggressive acquisition program is initiated.

1998

In the summer of 1998, German American Bancorp made two more acquisitions: FSB Bank of Francisco, Indiana, and Citizens State Bank of Petersburg, Indiana.

2000

In July of 2000, the company announced that it had, for the first time in its history, exceeded $1 billion in assets.

2015

He spent three yearlong guest professorships at German universities, two on Fulbright lectureships, and served as President of the Society for German-American Studies, 2015-17.
