Gettysburg College company history timeline
Gettysburg College, founded in 1832, is the oldest existing Lutheran college in the United States.
The Alumni Association was founded in 1835, among the first such organizations in America.
In 1839, seven years after Gettysburg College was first founded, Drs.
An 1851 graduate of Gettysburg College, David Wills, invited Lincoln to deliver “a few appropriate remarks.” Each fall first-year students recreate the procession through town to hear an honored guest read the Address and Gettysburg College remains nationally known for Civil War programs.
Elements of two great armies swept through campus on July 1, 1863, the first day of the decisive Battle of Gettysburg.
On November 19, 1863, College President Henry Louis Baugher gave the benediction at the ceremony opening the National Soldiers’ Cemetery at Gettysburg; speaking after Abraham Lincoln.
Women were first admitted into the college in 1888.
The student newspaper began in 1897.
In 1970 Bishop teamed up with Varmus, and they set out to test the theory that healthy body cells contain dormant viral oncogenes that, when triggered, cause cancer.
In 1976 Bishop and Varmus, together with two colleagues—Dominique Stehelin and Peter Vogt—published their findings, concluding that the virus had taken up the gene responsible for the cancer from a normal cell.
From 1981 he also served as director of the university’s George F. Hooper Research Foundation.
