Gibson Island company history timeline
The private membership community is laid out according to the formal plan designed in 1922 by the acclaimed Olmsted Brothers of Brookline, Massachusetts.
They own a 1926 cottage but are building a new home on the Magothy River.
The Great Depression in 1929 halted ambitious plans to develop Gibson Island as a resort.
Hogentogler, who started going to the island in the 1940s, lived to 102.
The increased number of year-round residents prompted the establishment of the Gibson Island Country School, an elementary school located on the mainland near the gate house, in 1956.
Pennsylvania native R. Kent Schwab and Nicola "Nicki" Schwab have lived in the area since 1970.
The Schwabs settled in a new waterfront home near the island and, in 2001, joined the Gibson Island Country Club.
The renovation and modernization of the charming residence took five years to complete following their 2006 purchase.
Rayder bought a four-bedroom, three-bathroom cottage on the Magothy River in 2008.
The school (briefly renamed the Eagle Cove School) closed in 2014.
The original Clubhouse was demolished in the fall of 2015, and a new facility built on the existing footprint.
