Formerly known as William Gilbane and Brother, the company was founded in 1870 by William H. Gilbane and his brother, Thomas.
Founded in 1873, the fifth-generation, family-owned Gilbane is one of the largest (sales) contractors, construction and real estate development companies in the United States.
In 1883, the brothers formalized their partnership by establishing “William Gilbane and Brother.” William Gilbane and Brother worked dusk to dawn, six days a week.
In 1902, the company won a major contract to build Providence’s new Central Fire Station, the largest public project at the time.
In 1908, Gilbane Building Company was officially incorporated.
Both 1933 graduates of Brown University, they led the company through a tremendous expansion period.
In 1946, Gilbane built GM’s new assembly plant in Framingham, MA worth $12 million.
In 1947, under the guidance of Paul Choquette, Sr. (Tom and Bill’s sister, Virginia’s husband) Gilbane developed a system of pouring concrete year round under canvas tents.
The relationship with GM grew and in 1957, Gilbane was awarded the Fisher Body Plant project in Mansfield, OH.
Choquette joined the company in 1969 and had graduated from Brown University and Harvard Law School.
In 1970 Gilbane, Inc. established Gilbane Properties (GPI) as the subsidiary to handle project development, financing, and real estate.
On March 7, 1980, the brick four-story building opened its doors
1980: Gilbane manages construction of the Winter Olympic facilities in Lake Placid, New York.
1981: Chairman and CEO Thomas F. Gilbane dies, and is replaced by William Gilbane; Paul Choquette becomes president.
Work on site began March 16, 1982, five days after the design and plans received final Federal approval, and broke ground on March 26, 1982.
In 1995, Gilbane did not even have voice-mail in the corporate offices.
In 1996, 26 years after the death of his brother and business partner, Thomas Gilbane, William Gilbane, Sr., chairman and former CEO of Gilbane, Inc., died.
In 1996, Gilbane was listed fourth on the list of the top 50 United States general building contractors, behind Centex Construction Group, The Turner Corporation, and Bovis, Inc.
By 1997 the building market had finally recovered and contractors were enjoying a growth period.
In 1997, Gilbane Building Company received the Build America Award from the Associated General Contractors of America for its work on the Baltimore Convention Center in Baltimore, Maryland.
1998 Gilbane, Inc. is formed
In 1999, Gilbane Building Company, with $2.2 billion in revenues, was ranked fifth on the annual list of general building contractors as selected by Engineering News Record.
Also in 1999, Gilbane was again awarded the Build America Award by the Associated General Contractors of America.

In 2004, Thomas F. Gilbane Jr. is named Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Gilbane Building Company
In June 2014, Michael McKelvy has joined the company as President and Chief Operating Officer.
He became CEO in 2016.
