Established in 1959, the agency was originally named Cancer Action.
Gilda was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 1985.
She passed away in 1989,but her legacy lived on when her husband and friends established Gilda’s Club and the first red door opened in New York City.
In 1993 eight women, all facing cancer themselves or with a loved one started to explore something, anything in metro Detroit to ease the path.
Today, our newly-named (as of October 2021) Cancer Support Community serves over 5,000 people annually.
