1862

1870

Step back in time at this 1870's Victorian-era reconstruction period home filled with artifacts of North Georgia's history from the Cherokee Indians to early pioneers, from the Civil War to WWII, and more.

1876

He went to Sulphur Springs, Texas, and taught for a time, but in 1876 he returned to Gilmer.

1877

Established in 1877, The Gilmer Mirror is Upshur County's oldest business institution and was originally founded as a weekly newspaper, The Upshur County Democrat.

1880

The first railroad, a narrow gauge, came to Gilmer in about 1880.

1915

The Mirror has been owned since 1915 by the family of George Tucker, a veteran of journalism in New York and other cities.

1925

W. A. Hart was a prominent citizen of Gilmer until his death in 1925.

1926

In February, 1926, the new Federal Postoffice was occupied, and now the streets of Gilmer are being paved.

2004

The Gilmer County Historical Society, Inc. (formerly Historic Preservation Society) was formed in 2004.

2007

In 2007 the organization’s name was changed and a 501c3 non-profit was formed.

2008

Donated to the Gilmer County Historical Society in 2008, the Tabor House is the oldest family home in the city of Ellijay.
