Consultant - Low-income Housing Finance Product Development and Pilots
Habitat for Humanity 4.2
Remote
Low-income Housing Finance Product Development and Pilots
Habitat for Humanity International Inc seeks to support families to build strength, stability, and self-reliance through shelter. Since 1976, Habitat for Humanity has set the stage for families, volunteers, donors, and supporters to come together, to build decent homes that provide the foundation for a better life. An estimated 2.8 billion people are living in inadequate shelter globally - a crisis that has been exacerbated by a lack of attention to, and investment in, informal housing markets. For low-income families in the countries where Habitat works, housing is often a process rather than a purchase. Families build and upgrade their homes incrementally as finances allow. This incremental construction process can last decades, significantly and detrimentally affecting the quality and resilience of their homes.
Habitat for Humanity established the Terwilliger Center for Innovation in Shelter (TCIS) to strengthen housing market systems by supporting local firms and expanding innovative, client-responsive services, products, and financing so that households can improve their shelter effectively and efficiently. TCIS works to expand low-income families' access to innovative housing products, construction services, and financing. TCIS collaborates with actors throughout the housing ecosystem, including Financial Institutions, Material manufacturers and Retailers, Academic institutions, and Start-ups to promote innovative and affordable products and solutions for the low-income housing market.
Access to adequate housing remains a critical challenge for low-income households globally. Micro Finance Institutions (MFIs) have a unique opportunity to enhance financial inclusion by offering tailored micro housing finance solutions to their existing and new clients.
The micro finance sector in India has demonstrated that low-income households are credit worthy, resilient and capable of prompt repayments. Millions of these customers are now in the capacity of graduating to the next level and are aspiring for loans to fulfill their life cycle needs such as housing construction.
India's low-income housing challenge remains acute. Microfinance Institutions (MFIs), given their proximity to low-income families and strong repayment discipline, are well-positioned to serve this segment at scale. In this context, and with the high demand for housing construction among the low-income segment, there is a business opportunity for Microfinance Institutions to develop suitable low-income housing finance products or adapt their current offerings to meet the loan requirements of this segment.
Project Overview
TCIS is initiating the formation of a working group to build a coordinated, sector-wide effort aimed at expanding access to housing finance for low-income and PMAY-eligible households.
