CDM Smith gis specialist job description

Under general supervision, performs basic to moderate GIS data development activities that involve municipal, utility, and environmental data layers. Supports the development of basic processes and methods for data development. Supports the development of map layouts, atlas maps, and web maps. May collect field data using laptops or tablets and/or GPS. Supports and executes quality control programs. Participates in client needs assessments and other GIS consulting activities. Conducts one-on-one meetings with clients to gather data. Installs basic GIS data and applications. Conducts basic GIS analysis to support clients and projects. This may include the generation of geospatial statistics, 3D and spatial analysis, and temporal analysis within a standard GIS software environment. Develops basic to moderate complexity database designs, including geodatabases, with review by others. This includes the configuration of geodatabase domains and geometric networks. Under general supervision, assists with hardware/software recommendations and specifications, and develops pricing for and/or orders hardware and software of basic to moderate complexity. May assist with development of hardware and/or software testing algorithms, and perform testing. May develop basic/configure basic GIS applications (web and mobile) using standard GIS tools. May duplicate and modify existing applications for new clients, particularly browser-based and mobile applications. May develop application testing plans and test applications. Supports end users for specific applications. Provides technical guidance and training to more junior staff. Reviews the work of more junior staff. May attend conferences, symposia, etc. to improve the visibility of the firm's products and services in collaboration with applicable sales staff. Performs other duties as required. Contributes to firm's TKM by assisting in the development of white papers and technical design documentation of new or special case designs, studies, etc. Submits technical papers and designs for publishing to technical journals with approval and review.
Minimum Qualifications


- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Geography, Science, Engineering, Planning, Mathematics or Government or related discipline.
- 3 years of progressively responsible experience applying GIS technology.
- Domestic and/or international travel may be required.
- The frequency of travel is contingent on specific duties, responsibilities, and the essential functions of the position, which may vary depending on workload and project demands.
- Equivalent additional directly related experience will be considered in lieu of a degree.
