Role description:
As a GIS Specialist, you will support environmental planning and permitting projects with a focus on siting and routing. This will include creating and maintaining constraints databases, providing analysis and GIS support for routing and siting studies, preparing maps and graphics, assisting with state Public Utilities Commission (PUC) siting applications and supporting public outreach efforts. You will assist our GIS team in driving efficiency by improving workflows through data standardization, automation, and tool creation. As such, you must have demonstrated experience with the latest versions of the ESRI product suite.
You will also assist with the growth of new and existing client relationships through delivery of quality work. You will be an important member of the Energy Transition team interacting with ecologists, cultural resource specialists, planners, engineers, senior technical experts, and project/program managers as part of an interdisciplinary team.
Qualifications & Experience:
Required qualifications for the role include:
* Bachelor's degree in environmental science, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), engineering, biology, ecology, or similar discipline
* 2+ years of experience as a GIS Specialist in environmental consulting. Associated experience with environmental agencies and departmental roles with commercial entities may be considered equivalent
* Demonstrated experience in ESRI products including ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Online
* Strong data management skills including creating, editing, converting GIS data following prescribed data management protocol
* Experience visualizing geographic data for both print and web products
* Experience task managing and assistant project managing multiple projects at once and working in collaboration with scientists, engineers, archaeologists, and other specialists in developing environmental documents for environmental projects
Preferred qualifications:
* Experience supporting applications for state PUC filings in the Midwestern and Eastern US
* Experience developing, managing and maintaining web map services and applications (ArcGIS Online, ArcGIS Experience Builder, ArcGIS Field Maps)
* Familiarity with workflow automation using Model Builder or Python

2026 GIS - Local Government Summer Intern

The MORPC Local Government Summer Internship Program provides the opportunity for undergraduate and graduate students to obtain practical work experience with a local government within MORPC's 15-county region to prepare them for possible careers in public service. MORPC coordinates the recruitment and placement of students to match each host's request; hosts make the final hiring decision and provide an hourly wage. Interns work for a host for a minimum of 16 hours to a maximum of 40 hours per week for a 10- to 14-week period, which means there are both part-time and full-time positions available. The summer 2026 internship program will begin on May 12th and will end on August 14th.
Interns gain applicable knowledge to enhance classroom learning by working with current government professionals throughout Central Ohio and acquire insights into the services provided by a regional planning commission. Interns also can attend monthly commission meetings as well as special MORPC-sponsored events and are paired with a MORPC staff member to serve as their mentor during the summer internship program.
Previous GIS interns have gained experience using ArcGIS Online, ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Field Maps, Canva, CivicPlus, Survey123, Microsoft 365, Python, R, and other software programs on the job. Specific past assignments include:
Field mapping at city parks to show trails, amenities, and interpretive sign locations
Maintaining an organization's GIS on a daily basis
Creating an interactive dashboard, such as a stormwater database or road database
Creating an interactive map for public use online, including a map for a township's Open Space Program
Updating key maps with current data
Providing static maps and images upon request
Acquiring and processing new aerial imagery
Assisting with ongoing upgrades of a county's ArcGIS Online environment
Digitizing maps from physical archive and other duties as assigned
Qualifications
Students must meet the following requirements:
30 hours of completed college coursework
Interest in public service careers
GPA 3.0 or higher (preferred)
Legally eligible to work in the United States
Reliable transportation to and from work

TRC is seeking highly motivated and diverse GIS Interns for our Summer 2026 intern program out of our Gahanna, OH Office. This is a paid full-time position. Anticipated duration will be from June through August 2026 (flexible). This position has the potential to transition into a Full-Time role upon graduation. The successful candidate will work under the supervision of Project Managers and Team Leaders and partner with engineers, scientists, and technologists.
Responsibilities
* Support users of in-house GIS applications.
* Analyze, organize, and maintain project related data.
* Develop spatial models, maps, and standards related to project data.
* Ability to work with various GIS platforms - (Esri and QGIS).
* Knowledge of data management in a relational database.
* Perform basic GIS database analysis and data maintenance.
* Perform cartographic, data entry, and editing tasks.
* Other skills including; IT technical, verbal, writing, research, problem solving, multi-task, QA/QC, and math/statistics.
Qualifications
* Preferred Qualifications:
* 1 year of experience with Esri or open-source geospatial software including ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, and QGIS.
* Concepts and principles of geospatial data management and cartographic.
