Glen Foods company history timeline

1923

23, 1923, to relocated Minnesota natives Glen and Ruth Bell of Lynwood.

1941

He graduated from San Bernardino High School in 1941, and, two years later, he joined the Marines and served in World War II.

1948

Bell opened Bell’s Burgers in March 1948 on the border of San Bernardino and Colton, four miles south of the McDonalds’ operation.

1958

He sold Taco-Tia to his partners and began another chain he called El Taco in the Los Angeles area in 1958.

1961

After working with John Galardi to launch the Der Wienerschnitzel chain at its still-standing first location at PCH and Gulf in Wilmington in 1961, Bell chose Downey as the launching spot for Taco Bell.

1964

Bell sold his first franchise to recently retired Los Angeles Police Department officer officer Kermit Bekke in 1964.

1967

On a 1967 trip to Florida, he bought a house in St Petersburg.

1975

Bell had resigned as chairman of the board of Taco Bell in July 1975, though he remained the company’s chief stockholder.

1978

In February 1978, PepsiCo announced that it had purchased Taco Bell for about $125 million.

1979

In 1979, a youth group at Grace Lutheran Church in Glen Ellyn put their faith into action to help their neighbors at risk of hunger.
