Globalstar company history timeline
Globalstar was established from a division of Ford Aerospace in 1991 and developed into a partnership of the worlds most respected communication companies.
The Globalstar project was launched in 1991 as a joint venture of Loral Corporation and Qualcomm.
On March 24, 1994, the two sponsors announced the formation of Globalstar LP, a limited partnership established in the United States, with financial participation from eight other companies, including Alcatel, AirTouch, Deutsche Aerospace, Hyundai, and Vodafone.
At that time, the company predicted the system would launch in 1998, based on an investment of $1.8 billion.
In October 1999, the system began "friendly user" trials with 44 of 48 planned satellites.
July 17, 2000 Globalstar USA announced that the handset price for satellite phones will be lowered from $1199.00 to $699.00 (with service commitment). Service plans now start at $24.95 per month with service rates as low as 99 cents per minute.
GlobalCom has been partnered with Globalstar since 2000 when it first launched full commercial service.
June 18, 2001 Globalstar USA/Caribbean announced FREE Short Messaging Service (SMS) to its data services.
On February 15, 2002, the predecessor company Globalstar (old Globalstar) and three of its subsidiaries filed voluntary petitions under Chapter 11 of the United States Bankruptcy Code.
March 18, 2003 Globalstar is introducing a New, Low Cost Fixed Site for Globalstar Satellite Phones.
July 7, 2003 Globalstar announces new lower service rates for United States customers when calling from overseas back to the United States as well as when making International calls.
March 11, 2004 The United States Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has formally approved the request to transfer the control of Globalstar’s regulatory authorizations and operating licenses over to the new Globalstar.
April 18, 2004 Globalstar plans to launch new enhanced services within the new number of months which include data compression which will allow a higher speed Internet connect for its customers.
Service will not be interrupted and in 2004 an accelerated business plan will be introduced.
In 2004, restructuring of the old Globalstar was completed.
In 2007, Globalstar launched eight additional first-generation spare satellites into space to help compensate for the premature failure of their in-orbit satellites.
In April 2018, Globalstar announced it would merge with FiberLight in a deal valued at $1.65 billion.
That deal was called off in August 2018 following a lawsuit from Globalstar's largest investor, Mudrick Capital Management.
In March 2020, Globalstar announced that the Third Generation Partnership Project ("3GPP") had approved the 5G variant of Globalstar's Band 53, to become known as n53.
On March 6, 2021, Globalstar announced to customers that the Sat-Fi2 (Satellite Wifi Hotspot) and Sat-Fi2 RAS (Remote Antenna Station) services would be discontinued as of March 12, 2021.
