GLOCK company history timeline

1970

German manufacturer Heckler & Koch made the first polymer pistol called the Volkspistole (VP/70) in 1970.

1981

It took about a year to design, but Glock finally applied for the patent in April 1981.

1983

The Austrian armed forces, the Bundesheer, formally adopted the pistol in 1983 as the Pistole 80, placing an initial order of 30,000 units.

1984

Norway followed suit in 1984, becoming the first NATO country to adopt the Glock pistol, giving it NATO National Stock Number: NSN 1005-25-133-6775.

1985

A United States subsidiary, Glock, Inc., was established in late 1985, headquartered in the Atlanta suburb of Smyrna, Georgia.

1986

The Beretta M9 became our military’s new standard sidearm in 1986.

1987

A second plant was opened in Ferlach, Austria, in 1987.

1988

Ironically, in 1988 Congress funded the gun for the Washington, D.C., police department.

1990

In 1990, cops in police procedural shows like Law and Order started carrying Glocks.

1991

In 1991, a Glock was used in a shooting in Texas, resulting in the deaths of 20 people.

1992

By 1992, some 350,000 pistols had been sold in more than 45 countries, including 250,000, a quarter of a million here in the United States alone.

A fourth subsidiary, Glock France S.A., was created in 1992 to handle sales to France and Francophone Africa.

1994

These debates led to the adoption of the Assault Weapons Bill in 1994 under the Clinton administration, which included a 10-round capacity limit on pistol magazines.

They then sold the older firearms, manufactured pre-1994, on the civilian market.

The 1994 ban kept Glock competition at bay for 10 years, allowing Glock to solidify their market share.

1995

However, Glock introduced an 11-shot model, the 9mm G26, in September 1995 that held one round in the chamber.

1997

Two new models began production in 1997: the 10mm Auto Glock 29 and .45 caliber Auto Glock 30.

1998

The introduction of Glock’s Gen 3 lineup in 1998 also helped Glock make sales to police departments.

1999

In response, Gaston Glock called a meeting of upper management in 1999 in order to discuss the latest embezzlement issues.

2000

In June 2000, Glock announced that the sale of 2,000 pistols to five municipal police departments had been placed on hold for this reason.

2001

In January 2001, Glock responded to the New Orleans suit by giving the city locking devices for the 1,700 .40 caliber handguns the New Orleans Police Department had just purchased.

By early 2001, 32 cities had filed suit against various gunmakers; New York was the first state government to sue them.

2002

In 2002, Glock introduced the 45 GAP or the Glock automatic pistol round, AKA the 45 Glock cartridge.

2004

Over the last 20 years, things have been quiet but good for Glock Ges.m.b.H., especially with the lift of the Assault Weapons Ban in 2004.

2008

In the same year he married his current wife Kathrin Glock, the nurse who helped him recover from a stroke in 2008.

2010

In 2010, the company introduced their fourth generation of pistols.

By 2010 these included the addition of a serial number plate, an integrated recoil spring assembly, a loaded chamber indicator, ambidextrous slide stop levers, improved ergonomics, and other performance enhancing features.

2016

In June 2016, the Federal Bureau of Investigation contracted Glock to procure custom 9mm Gen 4s as the Bureau’s standard duty pistol.
