GNU Project company history timeline

1984

Although the GNU Project wouldn't officially start until January 1984, RMS's announcement outlines GNU's initial plan of development and core components.

1985

The Free Software Foundation was founded in October 1985, initially to raise funds to help develop GNU.

1987

Through 1987, it was updated in minor ways to account for developments.

1999

In 1999 Stallman published “The Free Universal Encyclopedia and Learning Resource,” a paper calling for the creation of an open-source encyclopaedia.

2001

He was one of the principal people interviewed and profiled in the 2001 documentary Revolution OS by American director J.T.S. Moore.

2003

The first meeting was held on March 15, 2003, at MIT, in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

2006

The first iteration was released for feedback in January 2006.

2008

In March 2008, the FSF started a monthly newsletter for subscribers called the Free Software Supporter.

2019

In September 2019 Stallman attracted controversy after attempting to discredit an alleged victim of Jeffrey Epstein, a convicted sex offender.
