When the first Golden Corral© restaurant opened in Fayetteville, North Carolina, in 1973, Golden Corral Corporation took a confident first step in the restaurant business, beginning a tradition of offering guests real, wholesome foods in a family-friendly atmosphere and at a great value.
The 1982 purchase of 193 restaurants from Sirloin Stockade, a Kansas-based competitor, further swelled the ranks.
The first seven Metro Market, or GC-10, restaurants opened in 1991.
In July 1992, Restaurants and Institutions cited the company's emphasis on value when it named Golden Corral one of "10 Great Growth Chains." Earlier that year, the same magazine's "Choice in Chains" survey of 2,500 United States households named Golden Corral the best steak chain.
The first international Golden Corral opened in Juarez, Mexico, in July 1993.
1997: The firm signs a $45 million franchise agreement with Frisch's Restaurants Inc.
An October 2001 Business North Carolina article summed up the advantages of franchising, observing that "franchising gives Golden Corral a way to leverage outside capital without giving up equity.
Sales surpassed $1 billion in 2001, a sure sign that customers liked the new restaurant setup.
The company chalked up its 12th consecutive year of sales increases in 2003 as it celebrated its 30th anniversary.
Nation's Restaurant News had ranked it as the leader in the grill-buffet category for the eighth straight year in 2003, and Entrepreneur magazine had listed it as the top franchiser in the family steakhouse segment for nine consecutive years.
