Golden Valley Electric company history timeline

1946

Incorporated in 1946 in Fairbanks, Alaska, Golden Valley Electric Assn. took shape when a small group of locals became interested in bringing electric service to rural areas and furthering the agricultural industry in Interior Alaska.

1952

GVEA purchased power from the F.E. Company until 1952, when GVEA purchased the plant.

1999

AlasConnect was founded in 1999 as the telecommunications subsidiary of Golden Valley Electric Association in Fairbanks, Alaska.

2003

GVEA energized the Northern Intertie (pictured) in October 2003.

Golden Valley’s Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project came online in November 2003.

Initially providing fiber optic based telecommunications services in the interior of Alaska, AlasConnect expanded to offer Data Center and Managed IT Services in 2003, including a full regional hosting solution for business software and data.

2005

GVEA launched SNAP, its renewable energy program in 2005.

2007

The system peak of 223 MW was set in December 2007.

2012

Eva Creek Wind came online in 2012, adding just under 25 MW of wind to our generation mix.

2015

In 2015, AlasConnect was purchased by MTA providing a strategic alliance allowing us to augment our deep technical background with the capabilities and network reach provided by Alaska’s premier broadband network.

2017

In 2017, the BESS responded to 72 events, preventing approx.

System reliability was 99% in 2017.

2018

In the fall of 2018, GVEA will bring Healy Unit 2 online, which a 50MW coal-power plant.
