1901
The Golden West Hotel, dating back to 1901, plays a unique role in Portland history.
1906
William D. Allen, an entrepreneur from Tennessee and prominent member of the local black community, founded the hotel in 1906 to serve African-American railroad workers who were denied accommodations elsewhere in the city.
1912
1912 World Savings is established in Madera, California.
1916
From Fence Posts to Fiber OpticsIn 1916, Golden West was the first company to stretch telephone lines across the remote plains of western South Dakota.
From those humble beginnings back in 1916, Golden West's directors and employees continue to deliver the technology and service that our customers not only value but need to be successful.
1929
1929 Golden West Savings is established in Oakland, California.
1936
His investigation of this Act led to the organization of the Ogden Railway and Depot Company Employees Federal Credit Union on May 13, 1936.
1943
In 1943 the building became the Broadmoor Hotel, a low-cost housing development.
1952
Those early day pioneers kept things working through natural disasters, the Great Depression and two World Wars before the company was incorporated as a Cooperative in 1952.
1963
1963 Golden West Financial Corporation is formed to acquire Golden West Savings.
1985
In 1985, two additional offices and 272 million in deposits were added with the purchase of Texas-based Bell Savings Banc.
1987
When compared with the competition in other ways, World Savings exceeded industry averages in return on equity and return on assets. Its ratio of nonperforming assets was 0.62 of total assets in 1987, or less than half the average rate for a healthy thrift operation.
1990
1990-91 The company expands through acquisition of financial institutions in New Jersey, Florida, and Arizona.
1994
Although the 300 largest United States thrifts gained ground in 1994, the industry as a whole declined.
1996
By 1996, nearly 30 years since the company went public, Golden West Financial's assets had reached 35.8 billion, and the company operated in nearly half the states.
1998
Consolidation continued into 1998, and the purchase of Ahmanson by Seattle-based Washington Mutual Inc. made Golden West Financial the largest independent thrift in California.
2007
Including NAFCU s Credit Union of the year in 2007 and Utah Business Best of State award in the credit union category 10 of the past 12 years.
2009
In 2009 a permanent exhibit about the Golden West Hotel s history was installed on the outside of the building.
