Good Dog Goods company history timeline

1800

In the mid-1800’s, a dog or cat’s diet may have been more slightly more varied in cities where it was common for people to purchase horse meat for their pets, as working horses would die in the city streets.

In the late 1800’s, Spratt launched a line dog biscuits in the U.K. called Spratt’s Meat Fibrine Dog Cakes (2). The cakes were made from a mixture of wheat, beetroot and vegetables bound together with beef blood.

1826

With this may be joined farinaceous and vegetable articles – oat-meal, fine-pollard, dog-biscuit, potatoes, carrots, parsnips – soups made from the above, or with sheeps’ heads and trotters.’ (The American Farmer, 1826, p.374)

1870

In 1870, Spratt brought his biscuits over to the United States and the American pet food industry was born.

1890

A British public company took over Spratt’s formula and production began at a United States operation in about 1890.

1895

Even before 1895--when the first American veterinarians graduated--‘experts’ were telling pet owners to avoid giving their dogs raw meat.

1907

In 1907, another company started competing, and they introduced Milk-Bones.

1909

First known as the Association of Feed Control Officials, AAFCO was founded more than 100 years ago in 1909.

1916

In preparing the dough and in baking, care must be taken to keep it light and porous.’ (Henley’s Twentieth Century Formulas, Recipes And Processes, 1916)

1917

AAFCO first included language for pet food in their model bills in 1917.

1922

Canned dog food, “Ken-L Ration,” was introduced in 1922.

1940

In 1940, there were only 10 vet schools in the USA, but today there are over 30 schools pushing out thousands of veterinarians sponsored by big kibble companies.

1941

By 1941, canned food was so successful that producers were breeding horses just for dog food and slaughtering 50,000 of them per year.

1956

In 1956, the first dry kibble was produced through a process called extrusion.

1959

In 1959, they acquired the American Crab Meat Company, who made the pet food called 3 Little Kittens.

1964

In 1964, The Pet Food Institute (a group of pet food industry lobbyists) launched a series of ad campaigns to convince consumers that commercially prepared dog food was the only option to feed.

2007

In 2007, an outbreak of sickness and death began to occur.

2019

It is female-founded, will be ten years old in 2019 and has raised very little capital, no institutional money, and has grown by double- or triple-digits every year except one.
