Summary/Objective: The ControlsEngineer is responsible for the design, implementation, and support of control systems for advanced manufacturing equipment. This includes oversight of all controls-related aspects of automation projects-from initial scoping to detailed electrical design, software development, commissioning, and long-term support. The ControlsEngineer is expected to deliver well-engineered, standards-compliant control systems that are reliable, sustainable, and scalable.Essential Functions/ Responsibilities:
Lead the development of controls systems for automated equipment.
Own all phases of controls development on assigned projects: from functional requirements and architecture through programming, power-up, and commissioning.
Collaborate with mechanical and process engineering teams to define and document control system functional requirements.
Specify electrical, pneumatic, thermal, and motion control components based on system requirements (e.g. controllers, motors, drives, heaters, sensors, actuators).
Oversee creation and revision of electrical schematics.
Control systems software design and development including programming PLCs, HMI/SCADA platforms, Motion Controllers, and servo drives.
Execute system startup, debug, tuning, and machine qualification for new or upgraded automation systems.
Provide troubleshooting and support for existing production machinery and control systems.
Manage technical resources and coordinate timelines for controls-related project activities.
Implement control system software changes to support upgrades, process improvements, or safety initiatives.
Contribute to the creation and maintenance of software templates and standards for control system functionality, structure, and documentation.
Ensure systems are designed with safety, sustainability, and long-term performance in mind, in compliance with standards such as NFPA 79, UL508A, and ISO 13849-1.

Required Experience:
5 years of direct experience as a controlsengineer working on automated processes, equipment, and system integration in a manufacturing environment.
Operational knowledge of servo motors, stepper motors, motion controllers, temperature controllers, pneumatic controls, control relays, sensors, operator interfaces, etc.
Motion Controller programming experience.
Operator Interface programming experience (Ignition and/or Red Lion preferred).
PLC programming experience (IEC-61331-3 languages preferred).
Knowledge of PID loop control and tuning.
Experience reading and developing electrical schematics for internal and external builds.
Experience with common industrial, IoT, and motion bus protocols (e.g. Modbus, MQTT/OPC-UA, EtherCAT/EthernetIP, etc.).
Understanding of engineering documentation such as setup and adjustment procedures, calibration, software documentation, operating instructions, and maintenance procedures.
Familiarity with machine safety applications, electrical power distribution, and control panel design.
Understanding of Safety standards such as ANSI B11, ISO 13849-1, or IEC 62061.
Familiarity with other relevant industry standards such as NEMA, NFPA 79, UL508A, etc.
Resource management for project execution.
Familiarity with software development tools, scripting languages, or database systems (e.g., Java, Python, .NET, SQL, web applications) is a plus-particularly where integration with enterprise systems or IT/OT convergence is involved.
Proficient with written and verbal technical communication including generating reports and conducting group presentations.
Must be able to sit/stand for at least 90 consecutive minutes, and not suffer from any sensory deprivation and/or paralysis of the limbs.
Education:
B.S. in Electrical Engineering, Software Engineering, or equivalent.

Key responsibilities:
Solve complex controlengineering challenges and program using IEC 61131-3 languages within Rockwell Automation and Siemens toolsets.
Provide 24/7 support for businesses and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
Collaborate with maintenance and operations teams to fix root-cause issues, reduce downtime, and improve safety.

What you'll need:

Troubleshoots problems with processes and hardware.
Provide and maintain new equipment component standards.
Work with programmable controllers, robots, and CNC equipment.
Generate C.A.D. drawings for facility layout, electrical schematics, mechanical fabrication design, and equipment design.
Provide technical support for all health, safety, and environmental policies.
Support manufacturing through project activities to improve quality, consistency, and output by recommending, implementing, and documenting improvements. Documents will be complete and easily readable, to allow faster troubleshooting.
Specify, order, and perform follow up for equipment purchases. Assure proper workmanship to American Trim's specifications.
Assist in the inspection of equipment for safety violations, hazards, and improvements.
Provide technical support on electrical controls, automation initiatives, and equipment improvements/upgrades.
Maintains equipment records.
Maintains programs schedules and cost performance to budget.
Education, Skills and Experience:
Bachelor's degree (B. A.) from a four-year college or university in an engineering or technical discipline. Minimum three (3) years of experience with a manufacturing facility of high volume and automated equipment. A combination of educational and direct work experience may be considered.
Proficiency in reading and creating electrical, mechanical, pneumatic, and hydraulic drawings.
Experience with Allen Bradley controls and software. RS Logix 500 and Studio 5000 preferred.
Familiar with ANSI and OSHA safety standards related to robotic or mechanical equipment and has ability to implement standards into mechanical designs.
Intermediate or better experience utilizing mechanical design software. Autodesk Inventor or SolidWorks preferred but not required.
Ability to identify, define, and resolve problems in a timely manner by analyzing information skillfully, collecting data, establishing facts, drawing valid conclusions, and/or developing alternative solutions.
Ability to develop project plans; coordinate projects; communicate changes and progress; complete projects on time; and budget, develop, and implement cost saving measures.
Ability to synthesize complex or diverse information; use intuition, creativity, and experience to complement data; design workflows and procedures.
License, Certification or Special Requirements:

SCOPE: The ControlsEngineer is responsible for development, troubleshooting, maintaining, and improving automation control systems in a state-of-the-art food manufacturing facility. This position will introduce new automation technology and troubleshoot existing automation technology to optimize factory automation solutions and increase operational uptime. Communicates and educates users on applications, reports, processes, and tools. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Works with Engineering, Maintenance, Operations, and I.T. providing Automation/Controls skillsets to a state-of-the-art food manufacturing facility.
Interfaces with production operators, maintenance, management, and engineering groups to achieve the best possible solutions to process control problems.
Maintains and troubleshoots plant manufacturing operations to ensure a safe workplace.
Assists electricians, and maintenance personnel as needed.
Implements new technology to maximize plant efficiency.
PLC specification and programming, including HMI development.
Documents changes made to processes.
Specify, apply, diagnose, and calibrate process instrumentation. 4-20mA, HART, IO-Link.
Machine control circuitry and motor control design, including safety circuits and adherence to NEC/NFPA and UL codes.
Configure and control Variable Frequency Drives.
Electrical design, including creation of schematic diagrams.
Control System Programming: SCADA, HMI, and PLC code development to specification.
Lead troubleshooting teams consisting of vendors, electrical engineers, control system programmers, and information system programmers to deliver integrated automation solutions.
Interface with external system integrators and machine builders to successfully deliver fully integrated process equipment systems to JTM's Production organization on-time, on-budget, and that satisfy performance measures.
Understand and apply the ISA-88 standard and ISA-95 standard.
Other duties and special projects as assigned.
Flexibility to work occasional on-call periods outside normal business hours.

EXPERIENCE AND SKILL REQUIREMENTS:
Bachelors of Science or relevant experience in automated process control.
3+ yrs. Experience in engineering and development of integrated controls system solutions for continuous, material handling, and Batch processes.
3+ yrs. Experience in HMI programming. Packages include Rockwell Software and Ignition.
3+ yrs. Experience in PLC programming. Packages include RS Logix 500/5000, and Studio 5000.
SCADA software including Ignition and FTView SE.
Advanced Allen-Bradley PLC diagnostic experience.
FactoryTalk Batch experience.
Industrial networking knowledge, configuration, and troubleshooting experience. EthernetIP.
Knowledge of variable speed drive configuration and programming.
Ability to read and create electrical and process control drawings.
Strong math skills and ability to interpret engineering drawings.
Self-starter with excellent organizational skills with the ability to handle multiple priorities effectively.
