A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A CUSTODIAN
As a Custodian, you spend your day providing high quality service by cleaning office furniture, walls, windows, and floors; and empty trash. Your work typically involves performing highly complex custodial work. Coordinating and performing general custodial functions such as sweeping, mopping, dusting, and cleaning windows, light fixtures, and carpets generally fill up your day. Your job is essential to the city, and you assist by cleaning, dusting, and disinfecting areas such as restrooms, offices, and other facilities. You are constantly on your toes and ready for any new and unexpected challenges that may arise in the city. This can include operating floor maintenance equipment, including buffers, strippers, vacuums, and extractors or coordinating minor building repairs, scheduling, movement of office furniture and other items.
When you aren't assisting with custodial work, you maintain inventory records of building property, custodial and maintenance tools and equipment, and custodial materials and supplies. You also ensure to perform minor maintenance and repair work on custodial equipment and secure buildings after working hours or as required. You enjoy being helpful and have no problem providing assistance and support to other divisions within the department as needed. QUALIFICATIONS FOR A CUSTODIAN
* High school diploma, G.E.D. or equivalency
* Educational Substitute: Related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
* No custodial experience required
* Requires a working knowledge of custodial materials and chemicals, in the operation of custodial equipment, and in the use and maintenance of building maintenance tools and equipment
* Knowledge of cleaning techniques and procedures and of inventory control principles and methods
* Work requires the use of standard technical skills appropriate to the work environment of the organization.
* Requires knowledge necessary to understand basic operational, technical, or office processes
* Ability to use buffer, vacuum, polishers and other related cleaning materials.
* Bilingual English/Spanish preferred
* Must have a current and valid class "C" driver's license from the Texas Department of Public Safety

Cleans the interior of County buildings which includes vacuuming floors, cleaning bathrooms, emptying trashcans, cleaning office and conference rooms, mopping floors, washing windows, cleaning jail cells and cleaning doors and walls.
Utilizes various equipment and machinery such as buffer, vacuum cleaner and various cleaning supplies and chemicals.
Performs numerous tasks and duties to maintain the floors such as sweeping, mopping, scrubbing, vacuuming, cleaning carpets, buffing, waxing, etc.
Empties garbage and trash containers on a regular basis; keeps containers clean and sanitary. Maintains the cleanliness of walls, windows, and furniture as needed by washing, dusting, waxing, or buffing.
Maintains the restrooms in a clean and sanitary manner in order to promote hygiene; replaces soap, toilet tissue, paper towels, etc. as necessary.
Communicates verbal and written information with immediate supervisor and the public in order to provide assistance, receiving instructions, exchange information, and complete daily job-related activities.
Utilizes a variety of tools and equipment in the performance of job including brooms, mops, cleaners, buffers, keys, disinfectants, insecticides, vacuums, carpet cleaners, scrubbers, etc.
Performs related work as required.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:
Requires a high school diploma or GED equivalent with six (6) months of experience in custodial or maintenance duties or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
Physical Demands:
Performs light to medium work that involves walking or standing virtually all of the time and also involves exerting between 20 and 50 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis or skill, adeptness and speed in the use of the fingers, hands or limbs on repetitive operation of mechanical or electronic office or shop machines or tools within moderate tolerances or limits of accuracy.

2. Certificate of completion of a Custodial Training Program equivalent to the City College of San Francisco Custodial Training program; OR

Building Care & Safety

• Follow safety and security procedures at all times, including locking doors, turning off lights, and setting alarms after cleaning.
