1909

Left: In 1909, four-wheeled, motorized trucks were first put into service for Goodwill.

1919

By 1919 Goodwill Industries training shops and stores had opened in Cleveland, Denver, Los Angeles, and Brookline, Massachusetts, and the Methodists were planning to invest $305,000 for plants in New York, Buffalo, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, St Paul, and other cities.

1923

Goodwill Industries of Kentucky is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, headquartered in Louisville since 1923.

1926

1926: Helms brings his message overseas.

1940

In 1940, a Goodwill agency in Jacksonville, FL, used the first Goodwill collection box.

1949

#TBT today is a #Goodwill Store/Workshop from 1949 (we believe). The Store/Workshop was located at 11 West Salem Ave. in downtown Roanoke.

1951

In 1951 the company took in $13.6 million in revenue and paid $8.2 million in wages.

In 1951, illustrator Milton Caniff created “Good Willy,” a well-known symbol of Goodwill® efforts during that decade.

1952

Of the 17,545 handicapped men and women employed by Goodwill that year, about 30 percent had found full- or part-time jobs in private industry by May 1952.

When Goodwill Industries celebrated its 50th anniversary in 1952, there were 101 plants in the United States.

1957

Much has changed at Goodwill Industries of Middle Tennessee since it was incorporated in 1957.

1958

In 1958, Norman Rockwell, one of America’s great 20th century American illustrators, created “First Paycheck” and later gave it to Goodwill.

1968

In 1968, the “Smiling G” logo was designed “to represent the Goodwill name, and the smiles that come from helping people help themselves.” Today, it is one of the most recognized logos in the United States

1969

1969: The company forms an international department.

Established in 1969, Goodwill Industries of the Columbia operates in a 13-county region of southcentral Washington and northeastern Oregon, with stores in Kennewick, Richland, Pasco, Walla Walla, Wenatchee, Sunnyside, and Hermiston.

1973

In 1973, #Goodwill opened its first Attended Donation Center (ADC) in #Denver, CO. #ADCs were necessitated by the rising cost of fuel for home pick-ups and disposal costs for trash that was left along with donations in unattended collection boxes.

1981

In 1981 the Chicago chapter came out with its own line of designer jeans, called "Goodies." Although used, they came with a designer label and sold for $4.99, compared to $1.50 for Goodwill's other used jeans.

1993

A Denver outlet began selling used ski equipment in 1993, most of it in good shape but coming with a disclaimer for liability.

In 1993 Goodwill Industries processed close to 700 million pounds of donated textiles, and more than 99 percent of it was sold either in Goodwill retail stores or on the salvage market for other uses.

1994

A 1994 survey found that five of every six dollars in Goodwill Industries income went for program spending, which ranked the organization in the top ten social-service charities in the United States in that category.

Goodwill Industries of America Inc. changed its name to Goodwill Industries International, Inc. in 1994.

1995

Industrial and service contract work had become an increasingly important source of revenue for Goodwill Industries by 1995, when it accounted for $214 million, or more than 20 percent of combined revenues.

1997

Opened a Clarksville satellite rehabilitation office, the first outside of Nashville (1997)

1998

Later that year, Goodwill also made its voice heard in Washington, D.C., urging Congress to reauthorize the 1998 Workforce Investment Act (WIA). The implementation of the WIA, as it had been written, had greatly affected people with disabilities.

1999

As a way to attract a new kind of shopper, Goodwill Industries launched its e-commerce website in 1999.

Indeed, over 84 million pounds of foods were donated to these area stores in 1999.

Opened Employment and Training offices in Franklin and in the Berry Hill area of Nashville (1999)

2000

In 2000, Portland, Oregon, stores started an advertising campaign that was compared to trendy ads ran by Target Corporation and the Gap Inc.

2003

In efforts to encourage people to become financially responsible, Goodwill Industries began a partnership with the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) in 2003 to educate its recipients on the banking system.

2004

By 2004, Goodwill Industries International had grown into a network of 207 member organizations with locations in the United States, Canada, and 23 other countries.

2006

Renamed the mission services department in 2006 from Employment and Training to Career Solutions.

2007

Celebrated 50 years of changing lives in 2007, and served one million donors the same year.

2009

In 2009, Career Solutions served 11,237 clients and placed 2,465 in jobs.

2012

It was released in Jan 2012.

2014

She spent decades working for Goodwill organizations in Tennessee, Pennsylvania and Ohio before moving to Louisville in 2014 to lead Goodwill Industries of Kentucky.

2015

In May 2015, Experience Works, a program that places people 55 and older into employment and pays their wages during a training period, referred Henry to work at Goodwill.

2016

Nancy applied for the part-time position and joined the team in July 2016.

2017

In May 2017, she was hired as a full-time production clerk at the Meadowthorpe Goodwill store in Lexington.

June 28, 2017, marked the 60th Anniversary of the founding of Goodwill Industries of Middle Tennessee, Inc.
