Goodwin University company history timeline
Goodwin College was founded in 1999 with the goal of transforming the former Data Institute, a small business technology training center, into a regional force for economic development and educational access.
Two years later, he moved the school to Burnside Avenue in East Hartford, and in 1999, the state Board of Governors for Higher Education granted college-level status.
Officials at the former Quinnipiac College in Hamden cited similar reasons for the change in status on July 1, 2000, saying “university” reflected a wider breadth in academic offerings.
In 2005, Goodwin University initiated a major project to construct a new campus along the Connecticut River in East Hartford.
Since 2009, when the current campus was built on the site of an abandoned oil storage yard, Goodwin has been buying houses and land between Main Street and Riverside Drive.
In the years that followed, founder Mark Scheinberg led the nonprofit college as it earned accreditation from the New England Association of Schools and Colleges, Inc. (NEASC). In 2016, the State of Connecticut Office of Higher Education approved the College to offer two master of science programs.
In January 2021, it was announced that Goodwin University would be taking over the University of Bridgeport in Bridgeport, Connecticut, and operating it as a subsidiary, although UB would retain its own name and brand.
