Gordon Collgege company history timeline

1832

In 1832, Josiah Holmes built a frame schoolhouse in the center of the quiet town of Barnesville so that local children could learn the classics.

1872

Another 20 years later, 1872, the school was renamed the Gordon Institute, in honor of General John B. Gordon, who served Georgia during three terms in the United States Senate and two terms as governor.

1890

The Gordon Institute created a military department of study in 1890, and for the next 80 years, the school distinguished itself as a premier military institution.

1900

Barrington College, founded in 1900 as the Bethel Bible Institute in Spencer, Massachusetts, later relocated to Dudley, Massachusetts, and then to Providence, Rhode Island.

1921

In 1921, the school was renamed Gordon College of Theology and Missions.

1955

In 1955, Gordon moved to Wenham, Massachusetts, selling its old facilities to Wentworth Institute of Technology (WIT).

1959

Barrington College, founded in 1900 as the Bethel Bible Institute in Spencer, Massachusetts, later relocated to Dudley, Massachusetts, and then to Providence, Rhode Island. It took the name Barrington after the campus was moved to Barrington, Rhode Island, in 1959.

1962

In 1962, the school changed its name to Gordon College and Divinity School.

1970

In 1970, the divinity school separated from the college and merged with the Conwell School of Theology (formerly in Philadelphia). The merged schools settled about two miles from the Gordon College campus, forming the Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary in South Hamilton, Massachusetts.

1985

Common Goals In 1985, Gordon merged with Barrington College (formerly in Barrington, Rhode Island); the combined school retained the name of Gordon College.

2017

In 2017, the college was sued by Margaret DeWeese-Boyd, associate professor in the department of sociology and social work.

2019

In November 2019, both parties appeared before the court for a hearing and DeWeese-Boyd argued that she never worked as a minister with the college.
