Gould Academy company history timeline

1836

A building was erected, Isaac Randall was the first instructor, and the school opened for its first term on the second Wednesday of September, 1836.

The collection includes materials that had been accrued by the Academy since its founding in 1836.

Bethel Academy also accepted its first tuition-paying students in 1836, both locals and boarders.

1843

Reverend Daniel Gould left his $842 fortune to the school when he died in 1843.

1921

In 1921, plans to build the Bingham Gymnasium were announced by then president Frank E. Hanscom.

1932

One of the region’s most prestigious names in salons and spas since 1932, Gould’s is proud to offer an exciting salon and spa curriculum at Gould’s Academy.

1933

In 1933, construction began on Hanscom Hall.

1936

In 1936, the Academy earned accreditation by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges.

1969

Since the town of Bethel lacked a public high school, all local children were educated at Gould until 1969, when Telstar High School opened.

2001

After they were received by Gould, they were assigned numbers beginning with 2001 by James B. Owen, who apparently mostly followed the existing arrangement of the papers.

2014

These materials are still being processed at this time.COLL 1.31+ are made up of additional materials received after the initial transfer in 2014.

Much of the school's history is preserved by the Museums of the Bethel Historical Society, which has had stewardship of the Gould Academy Archives since 2014.
