Graceland University company history timeline

1895

The first day of classes was September 17, 1895.

Graceland University was established as Graceland College in 1895 by the RLDS Church in Lamoni, Iowa.

Founded in 1895 and sponsored by Community of Christ, Graceland University is more than just a school.

1910

Graceland’s nursing program began in 1910 in a cooperative program with the Independence Sanitarium and Hospital, Independence, Missouri.

1917

In 1917, Graceland received accreditation from the states of Iowa and Missouri and from the Higher Learning Commission, making it the first fully accredited junior college in Iowa.

1968

The Graceland campus was extended to Independence with the establishment of the college’s bachelor’s degree program in 1968-69.

1969

Jenner entered Graceland College (Lamoni, Iowa) in 1969 on a football scholarship, but a knee injury restricted Jenner to basketball and track.

Graceland’s online programs are operated on the IC, which was opened in 1969.

1973

The Jackets capture three NAIA Championships (1973, 76, 79). They were one of only two teams to qualify for nationals all 11 years it was run.

1976

After the 1976 Olympic triumph, Jenner became active as a network television sports commentator and made television commercials, lectured, and published several books.

1978

The NAIA stopped the championships following the 1978-79 season.

1981

1989

The Graceland Partnership Program, offering degree-completion programs on community college campuses, was established in 1989.

Founded in 1989, the team works internationally and locally.

1995

In 1995, Graceland acquired SkillPath, a business training company that offers seminars and classes.

1996

In 1996 Graceland Enactus was named United States National Champion, and advanced to compete at the Enactus World Cup in Paris, France.

1999

The physical location of the Independence campus was in three different sites before construction of the present building on W. Truman Road in 1999.

2006

In 2006, GU won its third straight Heart of America Athletic Conference Championship.

2011

Forty-eight student apartments opened in the fall of 2011 on the edge of campus and the newly renovated and expanded Newcom Student Union features a dedicated game room, computer lab and extensive student meeting space.

2012

With the completion of the Shaw Center expansion in fall 2012, Graceland has placed a renewed emphasis on the performing arts.

2015

In April 2015 Jenner announced that she identified as a woman, and two months later she revealed that she wanted to be referred to as Caitlyn Jenner.

2021

In April 2021 Jenner, a Republican, announced that she was running for governor of California; the state’s recall election was scheduled for later that year.
