As part of the ASCEND Inititiative, teaching fellowships support collaborative teaching engagements between a faculty member at an HBCU partner institution and a Yale faculty member. Collaborations across teaching styles and formats are encouraged. Interdisciplinary collaborations are welcome. Example collaborations include two faculty members teaching interrelated courses during the same term at their own campuses and bringing their students together in virtual conversation, to work on joint projects, and to meet in person through joint field trips as part of the work for the term.
Timeline
Spring 2027 semester proposals will be accepted beginning May 1, 2026. Proposals are due August 1, 2026. Awards will be announced September 1, 2026.
Funding
Each faculty teaching fellow will receive a stipend in the amount of $1,000 to recognize the effort they'll spend developing and/or collaborating on the tenets of the course.
Programmatic funds not to exceed $15,000 will be provided to support field trips, joint guest speakers, group project expenses, and other pre-approved course costs.
Applicants may also be considered for additional funding for up to $15,000 from the Office of International Affairs' Yale and the World Partnership fund, which supports projects that strengthen Yale's international relationships. Eligible proposals for Yale and the World Partnership Funding will:
establish promising new international relationships with the potential for long-term collaboration; or
significantly expand existing international collaborations into new frontiers
Expectations for Proposals
The faculty and students are expected to collaborate in innovative, interactive, and compelling ways. The courses are expected to be taught separately but to interconnect in meaningful ways. The course subjects are not expected to be identical but should interconnect in ways that inspire students to be excited about the topics of both courses and about what they can learn from each other.
