Coadjutant - Non Teaching
As a part of a NASA USRC project (80NSSC23K0555), the employees will work to develop and deliver an aircraft, both hardware and open-source software, that can sample water from a source, and deliver it to a base station in a repeatable manner. The system must be able to take off, perform the sampling, return to the station, locate and land using computer vision, and then deliver the sample to a container at the ground station. These tasks must be done fully autonomously. The design constraints of the project are: 1) the vehicle must be a multi-rotor drone with vertical take-off and landing capability, 2) the water sample must be 50 ml or larger, 3) the distance between the sampling source and the ground station must be at least 400 m, 4) the aircraft must be able to repeat the sampling task five times on a single battery charge, 5) aircraft must be easy to manufacture using primarily commercially available components, 6) the software utilized must be based on open-source codes, and 6) the total equipment and materials cost must be approximately $5,000 or less. A stock or modified commercially-available drone cannot be used to meet the objectives of the project, although such vehicle may be provided to aid the design and development process.
In addition to the technical tasks, the employees will also be tasked with fundraising activities as required by the NASA USRC program. This includes, but not limited to, writing of award announcements, providing content for the development of the fundraising page, promotion/advertisement of the fundraising site by email, social media, and other outlets. The target of the USRC program is to raise $2,000 for the project.
The employees will work with, and report to, Prof. Onur Bilgen and Mr. Mohammad Katibeh, to meet the deliverables of the project. In addition to the tasks indicated above, the employees will make weekly presentations, including a five-page weekly report, for the weeks 1-3. For the final (fourth) week, a summative report, 15 pages or more will be submitted.
