KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Reporting to the Biology Chairperson and working with the Faculty Member Instructor of Record, the GraduateAssistant will:
* Work 20 hours per week toward responsibilities related to their thesis research (including proposal development, data collection and analysis, thesis writing) and may include responsibilities related to on-going collaborative research;
* Give at least one research presentation at a local, national, or international disciplinary research meeting;
* May participate in disciplinary meetings as a session facilitator, may collaborate in grant writing, may attend workshops/sessions to learn research techniques, and may participate in relevant discipline-specific professional development activities on campus and off-campus;
* May participate in committees and provide service to the department, college, university, and profession;
* Know, understand, and follow all university policies.
Requirements:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
* Enrollment in graduate Biology Thesis program with good standing OR acceptance into the graduate Biology Thesis program;
* Excellent interpersonal skills to work effectively, and in a collegial and professional manner, with students, faculty, and staff;
* Demonstrated commitment and ability to work with a diverse group of students, faculty, staff and constituents in support of campus and department mission.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
* Past teaching experience or other vocationally-relevant work experiences

What You Will Do
The Field Research Scientist supports and manages the day-to-day operations of the research program in an assigned territory, by working with regional Site Leads and key stakeholders to plan, establish, maintain, collect accurate agronomic data from, and harvest corn soybean, wheat, and cotton trials.
Key Tasks and Responsibilities:
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:
* Must be located in or around one of the following areas: Southern New York, Pennsylvania, Maryland, or Virginia.
* Ensure safe and efficient operation of the research program with respect to budgetary guidelines and expectations and support the site ESH program as it applies to North American Field Testing and Operations.
* Selection, preparation, and maintenance of multiple field testing sites. This requires safe driving including frequent trailer use hauling loads in excess of 10,000 lbs; pre-trip inspections and use of log books.
* Plays a vital role in trial preparation including seed processing, packaging, shipping, protocol review, trial placement, and mapping/field design.
* Maintain field trial sites as week, insect, and disease free;
* Having a confident ability in identifying key weeds, insect, and disease problems is critical, as is timely and accurate implementation of control measures;
* With the use of handheld electronic equipment and Monsanto proprietary software, collect notes on various agronomic traits (e.g. emergence uniformity, flowering date, lodging, height, maturity, shattering resistance) in a timely manner throughout the growing season;
* Harvest plots and collect samples for quality and statistical analysis; ensure harvest data is evaluated and relinquished in accordance with crop advancement deadlines to aid in product advancement decisions;
* Develop, maintain, and implement the use of controlled SOP documents, QMS procedures, and investigative protocols;
* Comply with all Monsanto regulatory compliance guidelines for Confined Release and Stewarded Trial material;
* Collaborate with other Agronomic Research Specialists, Site Leads, and Principal Investigators in order to facilitate efficient trial planning and placement;
* Sharing of ideas and techniques and quick response to issues that may arise (e.g. weather or pests affecting trials);
* Works closely with Plant Breeders, Principal Investigators, and Agronomic Research Specialist to filly understand the multiple stages of crop development and the importance of each step involved and share experiences cross-functionally as needed;
* Field selection, cooperator relations, and ability to learn research equipment operations and basic maintenance (all types), field maintenance, and data collection;
* Basic Agronomic knowledge/Crop Management knowledge;
* Technical savvy and ability to adhere to compliance and safety policies;
* Utilization of IT tools, time management, prioritization skills;
* Must be self motivated with good decision-making abilities;
* Accountable for business unit or project results through leadership and coordination across site strategy;
* Ability to prioritize and monitor projects to ensure completion within deadlines and budgets;
* Build partnerships and share technical knowledge across sites;
* Stay involved in industry working groups.
Required Qualifications:
* PhD with minimum years relevant experience, OR MS with minimum of 2 years relevant experience, OR BS with minimum of 5 years relevant experience;
* Located in or around southern New York, Pennsylvania, Maryland, or Virginia;
* Valid Driver's License;
* Ability to lift up to 60lbs;
* Ability to obtain pesticide applicator license;
* Ability to work extended hours during peak operational seasons;
* CDL license or ability to obtain one.
Preferred Qualifications:
* Ability to obtain UAV license for operating drones.

JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
Penn State Behrend is seeking applicants for a Metals Manufacturing Researcher. The successful candidate will collaborate with administration, faculty, staff, students, and community members to develop, coordinate, and promote effective initiatives to help manufacturers solve industry problems, support workforce training, implement advanced manufacturing technologies, advance the use of automation, and adopt industry 4.0 principles and technologies.
The successful candidate will also have the opportunity to work on externally funded research projects. This includes, but is not limited to, carrying out laboratory work, identifying current research topics that align with Behrend's core competencies in metals manufacturing, performing literature reviews to keep up-to-date on the current state of the art, writing research proposals, supporting funded research projects, and creating project reports.
Key Responsibilities:
Works closely with metals manufacturing faculty to provide support on current and future research projects with special emphasis on material characterization, data collection, data analysis, technical report and presentation creation, 3D CAD modeling, 3D printing (prototyping), CAM toolpath generation, and 3D solidification and fluid flow simulation.
Manages ongoing campus metals manufacturing projects including the continued advancement of programs being offered in current manufacturing labs along with the creation of the new Center for Manufacturing Competitiveness.
Writes grants to support materials and manufacturing projects and programming.
Serves as a point of contact for metals manufacturing programs at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, and is responsible for program leadership and coordination among the various campus departments.
Improves the effectiveness of the College's methods of working with metals manufacturing industry partners by monitoring best practices related to manufacturing workforce development, advanced manufacturing technology implementation, and working on projects to help the manufacturers remain competitive and become global leaders. This will also involve making recommendations for new manufacturing programming and modifications to existing programs.
Works closely with industry partners, vendors, and the facilities department to help continue to develop and advance current manufacturing lab spaces along with the future labs as part of the Center for Manufacturing Competitiveness
Develops educational programming, both formal and co-curricular, around a broad array of manufacturing issues with special emphasis on casting, welding, forging, machining and additive manufacturing.
Works closely with the Directors and Faculty in the Schools of Humanities and Social Science, Engineering, Business and Science, as well as college centers and institutes, to coordinate metals manufacturing-related educational and research programs.
Represents the campus in the Erie, Pennsylvania, and national manufacturing community on metals manufacturing issues with special emphasis on casting, forging, welding, machining, and additive manufacturing.
Contributes to a work environment that encourages knowledge of, respect for, and development of skills to engage with those of diverse cultures or backgrounds.
Qualifications:
Master's Degree in a discipline related to materials science, industrial engineering, manufacturing engineering, or mechanical engineering. PhD preferred, as is an emphasis on training in metal casting, forging, welding, machining, and additive manufacturing.
A minimum of 3 year's experience managing projects and administering programs involving multiple, diverse stakeholders in manufacturing.
A minimum of 2 years experience leading/managing manufacturing programs with a demonstrated impact of increasing organizational awareness and implementation of sustainable practices.
Experience organizing and leading multiple groups of stakeholders to advance college manufacturing initiatives.
Demonstrated knowledge of manufacturing processes with special emphasis on casting, forging, welding, machining, and additive manufacturing
Demonstrated ability to develop positive relations with multiple stakeholders and to facilitate collaborative planning processes.
Excellent representational, presentation and writing skills. Successful grant-writing experience preferred.
3D CAD modeling, CAM, and 3D solidification and fluid flow modeling experience is desired.
Demonstrated commitment to and passion for improving and growing relations with manufacturers and helping manufacturers to continue to improve their operations and production offerings.
Willingness to work on a flexible schedule that includes evening and weekend work.

**Key Tasks and Responsibilities:**
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:

+ Selection, preparation, and maintenance of multiple field testing sites. This requires safe driving including frequent trailer use hauling loads in excess of 10,000 lbs; pre-trip inspections and use of log books.
+ Plays a vital role in trial preparation including seed processing, packaging, shipping, protocol review, trial placement, and mapping/field design.
+ Maintain field trial sites as week, insect, and disease free;
+ Having a confident ability in identifying key weeds, insect, and disease problems is critical, as is timely and accurate implementation of control measures;
+ With the use of handheld electronic equipment and Monsanto proprietary software, collect notes on various agronomic traits (e.g. emergence uniformity, flowering date, lodging, height, maturity, shattering resistance) in a timely manner throughout the growing season;
+ Harvest plots and collect samples for quality and statistical analysis; ensure harvest data is evaluated and relinquished in accordance with crop advancement deadlines to aid in product advancement decisions;
+ Develop, maintain, and implement the use of controlled SOP documents, QMS procedures, and investigative protocols;
+ Comply with all Monsanto regulatory compliance guidelines for Confined Release and Stewarded Trial material;
+ Collaborate with other Agronomic Research Specialists, Site Leads, and Principal Investigators in order to facilitate efficient trial planning and placement;
+ Sharing of ideas and techniques and quick response to issues that may arise (e.g. weather or pests affecting trials);
+ Works closely with Plant Breeders, Principal Investigators, and Agronomic Research Specialist to filly understand the multiple stages of crop development and the importance of each step involved and share experiences cross-functionally as needed;
+ Field selection, cooperator relations, and ability to learn research equipment operations and basic maintenance (all types), field maintenance, and data collection;

The successful candidate will support metals manufacturing initiatives including, but not limited to, workforce development, instruction, research, and curriculum development. The Manufacturing Research Engineer will have the opportunity to collaborate with an interdisciplinary team of scholars across the Penn State University system including PSU personnel, students, and local industry. Key responsibilities:
Provides technical, administrative, and teaching support for manufacturing workforce development initiatives and programs.
Assists in the development of manufacturing education curriculum with emphasis on casting, welding, forging, machining, metallurgy, and additive manufacturing.
Works closely with metals manufacturing faculty to provide technical support on research projects with special emphasis on manufacturing processes, material characterization, data collection, data analysis, and technical writing.

Required qualifications:
