The Harmful Algal Bloom (HAB) group of Fish and Wildlife Research Institute (FWRI) in St. Petersburg, FL, invites applications for a full-time Other Personnel Service (OPS) Assistant Research Scientist to provide bioinformatic support to ongoing research. The position is within the Molecular Ecology laboratory.
Minimum Qualifications:
7 years professional experience in a closely-related biological field or laboratory program is required. A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major course of study in one of the natural sciences or mathematics and three years of professional experience in one of the natural sciences or mathematics; or a master's degree from an accredited college or university with major course of study in one of the natural sciences or mathematics and two years of professional experience as described above; or a doctorate from an accredited college or university with major course of study in one of the natural sciences or mathematics can substitute for the required experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
Preference may be given to candidates with a degree in data science, molecular biology, or genetics, experience performing bioinformatic analyses or working in a molecular biology or genetics laboratory, and/or expertise with phytoplankton and harmful algae, including culturing.

Position Overview and Responsibilities:
Grant funding related to three different projects using environmental DNA will support this position: 1) guiding restoration in Florida Bay by examining cyanobacteria and sponge interactions, 2) advancing HAB monitoring using 18S and 16S barcoding from subtropical to polar systems, and 3) applying detection strategies for target groups of phytoplankton as part of event response.
The employee will be responsible for activities in support of ongoing monitoring and research for the Harmful Algal Blooms subsection at FWC/FWRI. Specific duties include:
Working as part of a dynamic and collaborative team to develop, validate, and implement analytical workflows to detect and quantify harmful phytoplankton taxa, their communities, and/or their physiological responses to environmental stimuli.
Maintain robust documentation of workflows and codes
Training staff on analytical and computational workflows and pipelines
Coordinating and executing genetic analyses associated with DNA sequencing by high throughput, Sanger, or Nanopore platforms for sequence variation by generating, synthesizing, and analyzing data using bioinformatics and appropriate statistics and troubleshooting techniques
Develop and maintain analysis tools and applications tailored to biological datasets
Managing large, complex datasets (involving data entry, QA/QC, and working with other staff to ensure continuity) and conducting ecological and/or phylogenetic analysis
Participating in oceanic field sampling and routine sample analyses
Maintaining phytoplankton stock cultures and preparation and sampling of cultures for experiments
Assisting with and/or leading preparation of technical reports, scientific manuscripts, and material for grant submissions and reports.
Interacting with IT and procurement staff as needed to maintain analytical infrastructure
Contributing to communication activities including presenting results to end-users of methods and associated data, and other outreach as requested.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
A strong working knowledge of: programming and data science principles; generation and analysis of genetic data associated with fragment length polymorphisms and sequence markers (e.g. 16S, 18S, COI, physiology markers) for taxonomic identification, enumeration, phylogenetics, and ecological inference; genetic sequencing platforms (e.g. Sanger, short read, Nanopore); biological sequence databases and associated tools (e.g., NCBI BLAST); experimental design; laboratory techniques; culturing phytoplankton; bioinformatic workflows, associated statistics, and visualization tools (e.g., QIIME2, scripting languages such as Python, R); Microsoft Office Suite
Skills to: Construct analytical workflows for DNA fragment and sequence data; determine the distribution and abundance of microbial taxa with a focus on harmful phytoplankton; identify and adapt statistical approaches to address specific differential hypotheses; develop basic training materials and train staff on analysis pipelines; maintain detailed records; prepare technical reports and scientific manuscripts

Project Closeout Assists the Principal Investigator,

JOB REQUIREMENTS AND DUTIES

General Job Duties For All Store Team Members
· Operate all equipment.
· Stock ingredients from delivery area to storage, work area, walk-in cooler.
· Prepare product.
· Receive and process telephone orders.
· Take inventory and complete associated paperwork.

· Exposure to cornmeal dust.
· Cramped quarters including walk-in cooler.
· Hot surfaces/tools from oven up to 500 degrees or higher.
· Sharp edges and moving mechanical parts.
· Varying and sometimes adverse weather conditions when delivering product, driving and couponing.

· Talking and hearing on telephone. Near and mid-range vision for most in-store tasks.

Additional InformationPHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS, including, but not limited to the following:
Standing
Most tasks are performed from a standing position. Walking surfaces include ceramic tile "bricks" with linoleum in some food process areas. Height of work surfaces is between 36" and 48".
Walking
For short distances for short durations
Delivery personnel must travel between the store and delivery vehicle and from the delivery vehicle to the customer's location.
Sitting
Paperwork is normally completed in an office at a desk or table
Lifting
Bulk product deliveries are made twice a week or more and are unloaded by the team member using a hand truck.
Deliveries may include cases of ingredients and supplies weighing up to 50 pounds with dimensions of up to 3' x 1.5'.
Cases are usually lifted from floor and stacked onto shelves up to 72" high.
Carrying
Large cans, weighing 3 pounds, 7 ounces, are carried from the workstation to storage shelves.
Occasionally, pizza sauce weighing 30 pounds is carried from the storage room to the front of the store.
Trays of pizza dough are carried three at a time over short distances, and weigh approximately 12 pounds per tray.
During delivery, carry pizzas and beverages while performing "walking" and "climbing" duties.
Pushing
To move trays which are placed on dollies.
A stack of trays on a dolly is approximately 24" - 30" and requires a force of up to 7.5 pounds to push.
Trays may also be pulled.
Climbing
Team members must infrequently navigate stairs or climb a ladder to change prices on signs, wash walls, perform maintenance.
During delivery of product, navigation of five or more flights of stairs may be required.
Stooping/Bending
Forward bending at the waist is necessary at the pizza assembly station.
Toe room is present, but workers are unable to flex their knees while standing at this station.
Duration of this position is approximately 30 - 45 seconds at one time, repeated continuously during the day.
Forward bending is also present at the front counter and when stocking ingredients.
Crouching/Squatting
Performed occasionally to stock shelves and to clean low areas.
Reaching
Reaching is performed continuously; up, down and forward.
Workers reach above 72" occasionally to turn on/off oven controls, change prices on sign, and lift and lower objects to and from shelves.
Workers reaching down to perform such tasks as scooping cornmeal from a plastic barrel, or washing dishes.
Workers reach forward when obtaining topping ingredients, cleaning work surfaces, or answering phones.
Driving
Deliver pizzas within a designated delivery area. A Team Member may make several deliveries per shift.
Machines, Tools, Equipment, Work Aids
Team Members may be required to utilize pencils/pens, computers, telephones, calculators, TDD equipment, pizza cutter and pizza peel.
Driving Specific Job Duties
Deliver product by car and then to door of customer.
Deliver flyers and door hangers.

Responsibilities
Responsible for cooking and packaging food product which is prepared to order or kept warm until needed.
Execute prep and service at your assigned stations with consistency and efficiency.
Follow established recipes, plating specifactions and portion control standards to ensure quality and presentation.
Responsible for maintaining quality and production standards on all menu items. Food must be fresh and of high quality when served to the guests.
Responsible for portion control and serving temperatures of all products served in the concession stand.
Responsible for cleaning, stocking and restocking of workstations and displays.
Responsible for operating large-volume cooking equipment such as grills, deep-fat fryers and ovens.
Ensures that all work areas and equipment are clean, food products are properly stored, utensils are clean and put away and floor is swept and mopped at end of shift. The Cook must be checked out before ending the shift by the Floor Supervisor to ensure the concession stand meets cleanliness standards.
Maintains sanitation, health and safety standards in work areas.

Qualifications
