Lab work includes data entry into Microsoft Access and Excel and using a microscope to sort insects to Order. Field work includes measuring and identifying trees and shrubs, assisting with bird banding, and assisting with sampling of insects using a beat sheet. Other duties may include assisting with sampling microplastics in headwater streams and conducting biological inventories in the field. Assisting with Bat/Mine project and Wetland research. Some evening and early morning (pre-dawn) work is required. Heavy lifting (35 lbs.) may be required. Field work may occur in the rain, on steep mountain slopes, and on hot, humid days.
Highlands Biological Station was founded in 1927 and is a field station of Western Carolina University. The station is situated on the Highlands Plateau in the southern Appalachian Mountains of western North Carolina and lies within walking distance of the town of Highlands. Position will start January 12 and end December 12. This position is 40 hours a week until August 17th, then moves to 20 hours per week.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities Required for this Position
Applicants should be familiar with native trees and shrubs in the region.
Minimum Qualifications
Applicants should either have an undergraduate degree in biology, botany, environmental science, or natural resources or be a junior or senior pursuing such degree. Applicants should be familiar with Excel and be willing to learn about southern Appalachian flora and fauna.
Preferred Qualifications
Preference will be given to applicants who are familiar in identifying common insects to Order and who have some experience working at a bird banding station.

Climbing
Team members must infrequently navigate stairs or climb a ladder to change prices on signs, wash walls, perform maintenance.
Additional InformationStooping/Bending
Forward bending at the waist is necessary at the pizza assembly station.
Toe room is present, but workers are unable to flex their knees while standing at this station.
Duration of this position is approximately 30 - 45 seconds at one time, repeated continuously during the day.
Forward bending is also present at the front counter and when stocking ingredients.
Crouching/Squatting
Performed occasionally to stock shelves and to clean low areas.
Reaching

Position Summary:
The Research Associate I will be part of the R&D DNA Identification team that leads development and optimization of DNA testing procedures for HLA testing and other DNA, RNA, and antibody-based assays. The position will require assay development, validation, implementation, and troubleshooting. This includes development of Next Generation Sequencing tests for PacBio and Illumina platforms. Other methods include, but are not limited to, Sanger sequencing, qPCR, Enzyme Immunoassay, STR, bioinformatics, and probe capture.
Other Essential Responsibilities:
Conduct research on projects with limited oversight through the development process and transfer optimized and developed products to operations.
Write standard operating procedures, validation plans, and summaries.
Work closely with R&D and Clinical directors, Operations, and other scientific staff in a team environment.
Analyze and critique results, note deviations and design relevant experiments.
Review primary scientific literature to help develop and troubleshoot experiments.
Give presentations to colleagues.
Generate reports sufficient for submission to peer-reviewed journals.
Coach and assist laboratory staff with newly developed procedures.
Qualifications:
Previous research experience in molecular techniques such as DNA isolation, PCR, probe/bait capture assays, and Next Generation Sequencing.
Familiarity with validation and implementation in a CAP/CLIA Laboratory.
Familiarity with assay design and assay performance optimization.
Ability to work effectively independently.
Education Requirements:
Bachelor of Science degree with a minimum of 3 years' relevant experience in HLA, R & D, or equivalent; OR
Master of Science degree with a minimum of 1 years' experience in HLA, R & D, or equivalent.

Description of Work
The primary purpose of the position is to provide administrative support for a project focusing on research and STEM student engagement, and to prepare the logistics to help the PI managing the Consortium and Performing the related work. The project is on advanced manufacturing focusing on nuclear security nanomaterials, nanosensors, and photocatalysts.
The Research Assistant (RA) will work closely with the PI to ensure project success by implementing the PI's planning and help him organizing and overseeing project activities within set timelines and budgets.

Summary of Job Duties:
The role of the Library Graduate Assistant for Experiential Learning is an engaging job that gives you the opportunity to make meaningful contributions to the educational experiences of students at the University of Arkansas while furthering your professional goals! The person in this role will fulfill a variety of job duties that will allow them to develop a diverse portfolio of skills and utilize creativity.
The Graduate Assistant will work closely with the Experiential Learning Librarian to support instruction, research services, and the promotion of library's experiential learning spaces and resources. This includes contributing to the development of an intentional, growing experiential learning instruction program. This individual may assist in delivering instruction sessions, which focus on helping faculty and students understand and apply maker, information, and media literacies within Kolb's experiential learning cycle framework, including how to access and use creative technologies in support of teaching, learning, and research.
As a member of the University Libraries' Experiential Learning department, the Library Graduate Assistant for Experiential Learning will also work closely and collaboratively with a dedicated team of colleagues in the library to provide excellent service to our patrons. They will receive the training necessary to answer research questions, help with special events, and participate in other opportunities that allow them to explore areas of personal interest that contribute to professional development. The Library Graduate Assistant for Experiential Learning will have the opportunity to gain experience with instructional design, developing learning outcomes and assessments, curriculum mapping, and Kolb's experiential learning cycle. Our ideal candidate will be enthusiastic to learn about information, media, and maker literacies and how they can be incorporated into the experiential learning cycle. Most importantly, they will be committed to creating meaningful connections with faculty, staff, and students from all disciplines and units across the University of Arkansas campus.
Reliable, in-person attendance and the ability to adapt to a flexible schedule is an essential job duty, as is the ability to create and maintain professional, positive relationships as part of a team.

* Enrollment in the Graduate School at the University of Arkansas
* Computer technologies experience (e.g., data entry, spreadsheets, word processing, web page maintenance)
* Applicants whose native language is not English must demonstrate competency in spoken English by submitting a test score of at least 7 on the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) speaking subtest, at least 50 on the Test of Spoken English (TSE), at least 26 on the Internet-based Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) speaking subtest, at least 72 or "pass" on the University's Spoken Language Proficiency Test (SLPT), at least 71 on the speaking portion of the Pearson Test of English (PTE) - Academic, or 50 on the University's SPEAK test. Preferred Qualifications:
* Education in and/or experience with creative and maker technologies (including, but not limited to: audiovisual recording, virtual and augmented reality, digital media, textiles equipment, 3D printing, data visualization, etc.)
* Experience with instructional design, curriculum planning, or program development
* Experience in using an academic library for research
* Experience with developing effective outreach activities to promote a program or service

JOB SUMMARY
Under direct supervision from a higher level technician or a principal investigator, performs a variety of moderately complex and generally standardized physical, chemical, or biological tests with procedures and techniques previously outlined by established protocols and other scientific data. Provides direction and guidance to lab staff.
This position is for a research laboratory technician funded by NIH/NIAMS grant. The applicant will carry out scientific experiments under the supervision of PI. The applicant will apply standard scientific techniques and analytical principles. Some specific responsibilities/techniques include tissue preparation/immunohistochemistry; Western blot and analysis; cell culture; reagent preparation; animal treatment and collection of tissues for laboratory analysis; ordering of supplies and experimental materials needed.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
Bachelor's degree in Biology, Chemistry, Zoology, or other related science, or high school diploma with four years of related clinical/ research experience.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
1. Conducts generally standardized chemical, physical, and biological tests on experimental/clinical materials.
2. Performs micro-analysis, lipids analysis, enzyme studies, and chromatographic studies on various types of tissues, secretions, and excretions.
3. Sets up equipment and organizes materials used in performing scheduled tests, experiments, and/or operations.
4. Selects the appropriate experimental/clinical format from established standard formats and prepares simple charts, graphs, and reports from data obtained during research experiments and observations of research subjects.
5. Isolates and identifies various microorganisms through established laboratory techniques.
6. Trains and demonstrates to graduate students, medical students, and other technical personnel, a variety of technical procedures.
7. Takes blood samples, pressures, and other specimens and measurements as required by research/clinical protocols. Inoculates research animals with various pathogens and performs minor animal surgery.
8. Collects tissues and specimens for laboratory analysis; obtains samples, prepares, mounts, and stains tissue, blood, and other substances for microscopic examinations.
9. Reviews scientific journals, abstracts, and other publications for information applicable to research projects.
10. Performs other related duties incidental to the work described herein.
