The Undergraduate Research Assistant- Level 3 (URA3), will assist with department-related grant-funded research projects for the duration of the grant. The URA3 works under direct supervision of a Principal Investigator (PI) and/or Research Technician (RT). The URA3 is assigned duties and carries out research objectives and tasks as outlined by the PI based on the active grant(s)/contract(s). URA3 will be expected to be familiar with guidelines and protocols for lab safety and have an excellent grasp of lab manuals and laboratory terminology. URA3 must be capable to perform routine tasks outlined by the Principal Investigator related to a particular area of research. It is a position which will also be responsible for assisting URA1s and URA2s with work related to the grant. Performing and understanding experimental design including hypothesis testing and proper controls, immunology-especially related to human mast cells and cancer immunotherapy. Help in keeping laboratory well maintained, clean, organized, and supplies ordered. The Johnstone Lab at the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute at VTC is seeking a entry level Research Assistant to complete general laboratory operations. The focus of the Johnstone Lab includes the study of signaling mechanisms, protein trafficking, regulation of vascular disease, design and testing of novel therapeutics (Johnstone Lab Website). VTTI's research to practice includes the highly successful Sharing the Road with Trucks outreach program is dedicated to teaching driver education students, and the community, how to safely share the road with trucks and other large vehicles. VTTI has reached over 85,000 teen and adult drivers in the past 7 years and intends to continue educating the public about the dangers that come from being on the road with commercial motor vehicles. Our institute seeks a CDL holder to help drive our trucks and take our program on the road to states across the country to educate novice drivers and community stakeholders. The Maternal Influence on Neurodevelopment (MIND) Lab at the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute at VTC in Roanoke, VA, directed by Dr. Brittany Howell, aims to understand the biological pathways (e.g., specific breast milk components, the infant gut microbiome, etc.) through which mothers affect their infant's brain and behavioral development. We accomplish this by collecting several concurrent measures, including milk samples, infant fecal samples, measures of infant structural and functional brain development using MRI collected during natural sleep, as well as other functional neuroimaging methods in awake behaving infants, and behavioral measures including parent-report and direct assessment in the lab. The MIND Lab is seeking a Research Assistant that will be part of the HEALthy Brain and Child Development (HBCD) Study at Virginia Tech. The Maternal Influence on Neurodevelopment (MIND) Lab at the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute at VTC in Roanoke, VA, directed by Dr. Brittany Howell, aims to understand the biological pathways through which mothers affect their infant's brain and behavioral development. We accomplish this by collecting several concurrent measures, such as biological samples (i.e., human milk, placenta, infant stool, etc.), measures of infant structural and functional brain development using MRI collected during natural sleep, and behavioral measures including parent-report and direct assessment in the lab. The MIND Lab is looking for a Part Time Research Assistant to work primarily on the HEALthy Brain and Child Development (HBCD) Study (******************************************************** This Research Assistant position will contribute to various sample collection and processing activities for our HBCD programs. The Noninvasive Ultrasound Lab at the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute at Virginia Tech in association with the Department of Neuroscience has an immediate opening for a highly motivated research assistant. The Noninvasive Ultrasound Lab led by Dr. Wynn Legon, studies human neuromodulation primarily using low-intensity focused ultrasound (LIFU). The research seeks to develop and optimize LIFU as a new human brain mapping tool and for translation to clinical therapies in addiction, mental health and pain. Knowledge in basic computer skills, record keeping and experience with human data collection is required. The candidate must have excellent interpersonal skills and be comfortable working with a diverse population including clinical patients, engineers, and scientists. Experience working in a research laboratory is helpful but not mandatory. The Purcell Lab at the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute at Virginia Tech is seeking a highly motivated Research Assistant. Led by Dr. Ryan Purcell, the lab aims to study the developmental neurobiology of psychiatric conditions. The candidate must have excellent interpersonal skills and be comfortable working with a diverse population. Experience working in a research laboratory is helpful but not mandatory. The lab requires the candidate to be comfortable with interactions with mice to maintain a successful operation of the research activities. Fundamental knowledge and an interest in molecular and cell biology is a necessity. Techniques we use include in vitro neural differentiation, gene expression manipulation, metabolic assays, and mouse breeding and behavior. Knowledge in basic computer skills, record keeping and experience with data collection is required. This position also requires some basic data analysis and presentation. Some familiarity with the above techniques is a plus. Strong intrapersonal skills and desire and ability to work with different participants and patients populations is a must. There is opportunity for the candidate to participate in research publication and attendance at national scientific conferences if able and appropriate. The successful applicant will also be expected to participate in lab meetings, analyze data, and assist in the preparation of figures for peer-reviewed publication and presentations. The Research Center Assistant will work under the direction of Dr. Anthony S. LaMantia, Director of the Center for Neurobiology Research (CNR) at the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute. The incumbent will maintain a working knowledge of CNR primary faculty, their laboratory personnel, collaborators, and research objectives in order to schedule and organize meetings, assist in purchasing and reimbursement requests, and generate travel and meeting itineraries for CNR personnel and guests. Experience in site monitoring and business operations is preferred. Further, the incumbent will: * Receive and manage calendar and meeting requests, using communication and organizational skills to facilitate calendars, including with senior VT and other personnel (Deans and VPs). * Coordinate logistics for scheduled meetings, including CNR grant development sessions, and the FBRI wide Research in Progress Seminar series, which is managed by CNR. * Coordinate logistics for CNR-sponsored graduate student/post-doc professional educational, professional development, and data review/discussion sessions. * Maintain a high degree of confidentiality, flexibility, and collaboration across a matrixed organization. * Coordinate and book domestic and international travel arrangements for members of the team. * Maintain supply inventories and process financial reimbursements. * Screen and manage correspondence, inquiries, and reports by routing to relevant staff members in an accurate and timely manner. * Maintain working relationship with departments throughout the Institute and main campus, including Admin, Human Resources, Finance and Facilities in order to accomplish tasks. * Perform other administrative duties as assigned.
