Summary of responsibilities:
A TeachingAssistant (TA) is typically an undergraduate or graduate student, or a degree holder, employed to support the instructional mission of a department. TAs work under the direct supervision of a Professor of Record (POR) or Faculty and provide academic support through various instructional and administrative activities. They are vital in enhancing student learning and ensuring effective course delivery. Selection as a TA is an honor reserved for exceptional individuals who exemplify maturity, academic excellence, and leadership.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities:
Attend all required training sessions and orientation activities.
Familiarize yourself thoroughly with the course content, academic expectations, assignments, and how they align with the Course Learning Outcomes (CLOs).
Review the course roster and identify any students who require accommodation or special support.
Examine all course materials on the Learning Management System (Blackboard), and collaborate with the POR or Faculty to establish and confirm accurate attendance dates in accordance with the academic calendar.
Prepare any materials requested by the POR or Faculty in advance.
Meet with the POR or Faculty prior to the course start and schedule regular coordination meetings throughout the term.
In collaboration with the POR or Faculty, ensure attendance is accurately recorded for each class session.
Monitor for patterns of absence and report any concerns as appropriate.
Support classroom activities such as lectures, discussions, labs, workshops, or other instructional sessions as needed.
Attend class sessions as needed.
Lead Supplemental Instruction (SI) sessions under the supervision of the POR or Faculty.
With the approval of the Department Chair, assist with grading assignments under the guidance of the POR or Faculty, ensuring grades reflect the academic rigor of the course and are submitted within one week of the assignment due date.
Provide constructive and meaningful feedback on student assignments in coordination with the POR or Faculty.
Monitor student participation in discussions, group work, and assignments; document and report any patterns of concern to the POR or Faculty
Attend class sessions as requested and maintain regular office hours, as required by the POR or Faculty.
Submit early alerts for concerns related to grades or attendance in consultation with the POR or Faculty.
Be available for student consultations with the approval of the POR or Faculty.
Submit any remaining grades and inform the POR or Faculty once all grades are ready for finalization; provide documentation of grade calculations if requested.
Reflect on the course outcomes, and document key challenges and successes.
Submit a brief written self-reflection to the POR or Faculty at the conclusion of the course.

Both solid organ (heart, liver, kidney) and stem cell transplants are performed at Children's of Alabama, where UAB Department of Pediatrics faculty practice. We are seeking a qualified infectious diseases trained physician to interface with these transplant teams in the pre-transplant assessment period and the short-term and long-term post-transplant periods. The opportunity is primarily a clinical position, but scholarship is also anticipated from the successful candidate. The University of Alabama School of Medicine at Birmingham ( UAB ) is one of the premier research-intensive schools in the nation, ranked No. 22 overall and No. 9 among public institutions in NIH funding by the Blue Ridge Institute for Medical Research for 2019. UAB currently is experiencing major and sustained investment and growth, due to both its exceptional research faculty and its culture of collaboration. In addition to 9 clinically active faculty, the Division of Pediatric Infectious Diseases has a longstanding, internationally renowned record in viral research, primarily the study of herpesvirus infections and antiviral therapeutics, from bench to bedside. Research programs of scientists in the Division include molecular virology and host-virus interactions, viral epidemiology and diagnostics, in vitro and in vivo assessments of novel antiviral agents, investigations of mechanisms of antiviral resistance, and the development and conduct of large international clinical trials of antiviral therapies for rare viral diseases. Collaborating with neuroscientists at UAB , Division scientists also have developed and evaluated genetically engineered herpes simplex virus for the treatment of brain tumors. And in close partnership with Southern Research, the Division guides a robust drug discovery program that most recently is notable for the discovery of remdesivir's activity against coronavirus, leading to the worldwide evaluation of this new antiviral drug for the SARS -CoV-2 pandemic. There are nine physician researchers and three PhDs in the Division, with approximately $14 million annually in NIH and CDC funding. Division researchers lead four national and international networks of clinical collaborators on bench-to-bedside-to-bench research that has resulted in 13 drug indications and label changes.

The Department of Biostatistics in the School of Public Health ( SOPH ) at the University of Alabama at Birmingham ( UAB ), is inviting applications from outstanding candidates for multiple full-time tenure-track faculty positions at the rank of Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, or Professor (12-month appointments with rank and tenure status commensurate with qualifications). Faculty will be expected and given the opportunity to develop their own independent line of research. In addition, substantial opportunities to collaborate and publish with other established investigators will be offered. This is an excellent opportunity to expand one's career into one of the most rapidly progressing and in-demand areas of scientific research. The Department of Biostatistics has 20 faculty members and over 40 administrative and research staff contributing to a diverse portfolio of interdisciplinary projects and academic programs, and is home of the DATA coordinating and Collaborative Research Unit ( DATA CRU , *************************** ) specializing in the design, data management, and statistical analysis of clinical trials and cohort studies. The Department offers four graduate degrees including the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) and Master of Science (MS), both founded in theory and application. The Doctor of Public Health with concentration in Biostatistics, one of only five programs in the US, and Master of Science in Public Health ( MSPH ) with concentration in Biostatistics provide a balance between the application of biostatistics and public health theory and leadership. The department also provides courses supporting SOPH undergraduate and graduate degree programs, interdisciplinary graduate degree programs, and the graduate Certificate in Applied Biostatistics and Epidemiology. Founded in 1978, the UAB SOPH has grown to 84 full-time faculty and 806 students (in the 2023-24 academic year). The UAB SOPH is the only CEPH -accredited public health program in Alabama and both the school (18th) and department (13th) are ranked in the top 20 nationally by U.S. News & World Report . The SOPH is second only to the School of Medicine at UAB for extramural research funding among all 12 schools at UAB . In 2023, the UAB SOPH had more than $42 million in grants and contracts and ranked 29th among all Schools of Public Health and 19th for all Public Schools of Public Health for NIH funding. UAB is a very high research activity (R1) university and academic health center that discovers, teaches, and applies knowledge for the intellectual, cultural, social, and economic benefit of Birmingham, the state, and beyond. Required Qualifications
Candidates must have a background in biostatistics or statistics methodology with a demonstrated ability to conduct independent research as well as collaborate in a multidisciplinary team setting. Preferred candidates will have a research focus in one of three major concentration areas: design and analysis of clinical trials and/or longitudinal cohort studies, highly computational methods and complex modeling, or statistical genetics and omics research. A doctoral degree in biostatistics, data science, statistics, psychometrics, or related field is required. A successful track record of publication and collaboration as part of a research team is preferred. It is expected that the successful candidate will establish an independent line of research, collaborate and publish with co-investigators, and develop a track record of extramurally funded research providing salary support. Faculty members will engage in service activities to the Department and School, including advising students' practicum experiences and serving on thesis/dissertation committees. Graduate level teaching (minimum 1 course per year) is required.

The successful candidates will be an MD, MD/PhD or PhD and able to sustain a grant-supported clinical and/or laboratory research program in genomic medicine. For clinicians, up to 20% effort seeing patients in genomic medicine-related clinics can be supported, in which case board certification in clinical genetics by the American Board of Medical Genetics and Genomics is strongly encouraged. Faculty rank is open, depending on the experience of the candidate and external grant funding of the candidate.
