The Genitourinary Teaching Associate (GuTA) is a highly specialized lay instructor in a med-school's clinical-skills program. GuTAs are trained to teach medical students and other health professionals how to perform sensitive examinations of the genital and urinary systems (Breast / Pelvic or Prostate / Rectal). As a part of a comprehensive Foundations of Patient Care/Clinical Skills longitudinal course (18 months) at Georgetown University's School of Medicine, additional responsibilities include, but are not limited to: + Demonstrate teaching protocol, coaching medical trainees through performance of exams on the GuTA's body. + Foster medical learners' development of essential communication skills, professionalism, and ethics when accurately carrying out sensitive genitourinary examinations. + Follow the appropriate protocol for examinations for patients, accurately following guidelines and patient's preferences. Students receive this instruction in their 2nd-year of medical school, after learning the physical exam maneuvers for other organ systems (cardiopulmonary, musculoskeletal, etc.) in year 1. GuTAs, like our Physical Exam Teaching Associates and Standardized Patients, are a critical part of the Office of Medical Education's (OME) core curriculum of clinical skills cura personalis. They are modeling and introducing patient care and respect to medical learners, with the additional aspect of sensitive and invasive patient examinations. Requirements and Qualifications + Genitourinary Teaching Associates require many hours of specialized training and practice before being qualified to teach without supervision to very small groups of medical students at a time; there are no formal education requirements beyond the skill and professionalism that their training and teaching require + GuTAs may be recruited and trained from our cohort of Physical Exam Teaching Associates and/or Standardized Patients, who have familiarity with the methodologies and theories of interactive teaching + Ability to work on a project basis, typically on weekends throughout the fall Work Mode Designation This position has been designated as On-Campus. This is work that must be accomplished in-person, in equipped clinical-exam rooms for teaching and assessment, GUSOM's Integrated Learning Center (ILC) or similar facility. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Provide opportunities for students to practice and improve skills and activities that enrich instruction in the classroom.
