Grambling State University company history timeline
On this date in 1901, Grambling State University was founded.
In response Washington in 1901 sent Charles P. Adams, a recent graduate of Tuskegee, to help organize the school.
The school came under the control of the Lincoln Parish School Board in 1919, and its mission was expanded to include teacher training.
In 1928, the school became a state junior college and renamed as Louisiana Negro Normal and Industrial Institute.
By 1928, the school was able to offer two-year professional certificates and diplomas after becoming a state junior college.
Following Founding President Charles P. Adams, who served for 35 years, Ralph Waldo Emerson Jones became the second president in 1936.
In 1936, the program was reorganized to emphasize rural education.
In 1941 Grambling (then known as Louisiana Negro Normal and Industrial Institute) hired Robinson to coach football and basketball and teach physical education.
The first baccalaureate degree was awarded in 1944, in elementary education.
The college again was renamed as Grambling College, in 1946.
In 1949, the college earned its first accreditation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS).
In 1949, the college was accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS). The Grambling science building is one of twenty-six public structures in Louisiana constructed by the prominent contractor George A. Caldwell, who completed major public buildings throughout the state.
Surpassing Bear Bryant’s record for wins, Robinson earned his 324th career victory on October 5, 1985, with a 27–7 defeat of Prairie View A&M in Dallas.
Gallot is a 1987 GSU graduate where he received a bachelor of arts in Arts & History.
On October 7, 1995, having guided Grambling to a 42–6 win over Mississippi Valley State, he became the first coach to claim 400 victories.
The recipient of numerous awards, Robinson was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1997.
Grambling State University’s first female president, Doctor Neari Francois Warner, served a three-year interim term until the selection of Doctor Horace Judson, who became the institution’s seventh president in 2004.
He served three terms in the house before winning his first term in the senate in 2011.
On April 4, 2014, Pogue announced his retirement effective June 30, 2014.

The University of Louisiana System (ULS) Board of Supervisors announced (07/26/2016) that the tenth President of Grambling State University (GSU) will be former Louisiana state senator, and state representative, Richard J. Gallot, Jr.
In 2019, Grambling broke ground for building of the first digital library on a HBCU campus and first for a Louisiana collegiate institution.
The $16.6 million 50,000 square feet project is slated to be complete in 2020.
