Grand Resorts Inc company history timeline

1968

The resort opened in 1968 as the Lake Geneva Playboy Club Hotel, the lush property served as a luxurious escape for Midwest travelers.

1974

The Lakewood Club hosted the 1974 United States Senior Women's Amateur Championship for the first time.

1976

1976: Now the acting president of the Grand Hotel, Dan Musser began an extensive renovation of the Grand Hotel with the help of architect Richard Bos and decorator Carleton Varney.

1979

When Hurricane Frederick wrought some serious damage to the grounds in 1979, the owners of the Grand Hotel decided to seek Marriott International for help.

1979: Hurricane Frederick tore through the greater Mobile Bay area, bringing significant destruction in its wake.

Musser fell in love with the building and eventually purchased it outright from Woodfill in 1979.

1980

The hotel reopened on April 10, 1980.

1980: Director Jeannot Szwarc filmed Somewhere in Time at the Grand Hotel.

1981

In 1981, the Marriott Corporation bought the Grand Hotel and added the North Bay House and the Marina building, bringing total guest rooms to 306.

1987

The Musser family specifically added several new additions in 1987, such as the Woodfill Conference Center and the Cupola Bar.

1993

The hotel commenced operations December 18, 1993 and was billed as the largest hotel and casino in the world.

1994

1994: The new Woods Nine golf course finally opened, which was then combined with the Grand Nine to form The Jewel.

1999

1999—Golf course, clubhouse, heated pool, tennis courts, lawn games and wine cellar renovated

2000

MGM RESORTS INTERNATIONAL COMPANY HISTORY MGM MIRAGE was formed when MGM Grand, Inc. acquired Mirage Resorts, Inc. on May 31, 2000, in what was, at that time, the largest transaction of its kind in the gaming industry, valued at $6.4 billion.

2000: Construction began on the Millennium Wing, a 200-seat addition to the Main Dining Room.

2001

A member of Historic Hotels of America since 2001, the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island, Michigan, is one of the last surviving Grand Dames of the Gilded Age.

The expansion of the hotel continued into the next century with the construction of the Millennium Wing, which debuted in 2001.

2002

2002—Mountain View Grand celebrates Grand re-opening

2003

2003: Marriott continued improving the resort by initiating a series of renovations to the Azalea and Dogwood golf courses.

2004

MGM MIRAGE sold Golden Nugget in Las Vegas and Golden Nugget in Laughlin in 2004.

2006

An expansion of the Grand’s grounds and new real estate opportunities were announced in 2006.

2008

The Colony Club at the Grand Hotel opened in spring 2008 and featured condominiums overlooking picturesque Point Clear and Mobile Bay.

2009

A new aquatics facility and a tennis center opened at the resort in July 2009.

MGM MIRAGE sold Treasure Island in 2009.

In 2009 the Grand Hotel was named one of the top 10 United States Historic Hotels of America by the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

2009—Commissioned Northern Power Systems to build a 121-foot wind turbine behind the resort

2010

2010: The Musser family adds the Trophy Toom, which celebrates their dog, Sadie.

2012

In 2012, the Grand Hotel celebrated its 125th anniversary with a series of memorable events: Saturday night dinner with former Michigan governors in attendance, presentation by Grand Hotel interior designer Carlton Varney, Friday night fireworks, live performance by John Pizzarelli and much more.

2016

"The Experience" opened in the Spring of 2016.

2017

2017: The Grand Hotel celebrates its 130th birthday with a marvelous outdoor celebration from June 30 to July 2.

Beginning in 2017, the Grand began a magnificent transformation designed to recast the entire resort as a sanctuary of modern Southern hospitality.

2017: The Michigan Department of Energy, Labor & Economic Growth certified the Grand Hotel as a “Green Lodging Michigan Leader” for the reduction of its carbon footprint.

2018

2018: The Grand Hotel Golf Resort & Spa completed a massive $34 million renovation that fully refurbished many areas throughout the facility.

2019

2019: Having operated the Grand Hotel for nine decades, the Musser family decided to sell the business to KSL Capital Partners.
